[PLOG] Corsairs of the Crimson Dragon

Post by The_Peacemaker »

Here is my army plog for my dark elves/twighlightking/dreadelves/etc.... Lots of conversions.

Repeater crossbowmen. I never liked how the regular troops show them with heavy armour but every game system has them with light armour at best.

Looking good. Are the guys at the bottom going to be Executioners? I do think the WE Ranger draichs look much better than the over-elaborate DE ones, but the lack of skull-masks lets them down a bit IMO.

The AoW Vestal is amazing. I bought a box of them, but found the sculpting and casting quality so dire that I have only used them as casualties on the bases of a couple of my Chaos models. But you have somehow managed to make that one look good! What did you use for the splashy water effect on her base, BTW?

They look great! A nice use of bits to create a novel unit.
I also like the bases and use of water effects, that timber works well.

Greatlooking crossbows. Whole different feel with cloaks. Water is amazing too.

I am working on those same vestals and cursing the quality. I'm blaming my less than good painting results on that :P Good seeing a great result!

Yes they will be executioners. I actually dont care for the new GW executioners with skull faces, i liked the old ones with helmets and covered mouths. I'll be using the helmeted corsair heads and some heads from the cold one knights.

The AoW vestal - i got her to look good by painting her well. I also pinned her leg because it kept breaking and then covered it with water effect.
The water is just clear silicone caulking tube i got from a hardware store. I looked up some videos on how to do water effects and paint underneath first.
It looks difficult to do but its actually quite easy. ....and its one of those things that looks good when done but not while your doing it.

Thanks. I got the pegasus conversion from another popular plog on durchi forums.

Saintofm wrote:Can't wait to see what the Drake Rider looks like when finished.

Probably gonna greenstuff some ribbons/small cape, base will be some kind of wrecked ship in water with mast sticking out, maybe beach or rock in water.
I actually got a whole unit of these to make so maybe a mini diorama. ....rules for a drake rider unit are in kings of war. Maybe 9th age will write some, and AoS can just use heroes on pegasus.

Thanks for all the compliments! I knew id find sone appreciation on the durchii forums :)

Used a dark red. Mixed it with bloodred to highlight up to bloodred. Then mixed bloodred with white and lighlighted up to a pinkish hue. Then used a red wash.
I did one cape highlighted up to orange instead of pink. Pictures dont really pick up the difference though.

As for how to mix and do highlights - lots of great videos on youtube that can teach it.

Quick update

Did some more work on these guys. They were hard to rank up until I just trimmed and bent the cloaks alot.(they stick out super far).
The second picture shows the types of heads I'm thinking of using. I want all these guys to have fairly ornate helmets(not too many repeats) as they are supposed to be the nobles.

Awesome work! The most epic thing on Druchii.net are always the active plogs!
I also really like your simple but effective wood basing.

How did you made / painted the water on vestal base?

Will both try out as soon I get some time to paint!

Finished building this unit.
Lots of fun conversions. Had to trim and cut down those long capes just a little bit so they would rank up.
I did make one guy with a skull faceplate as a small homage to the executioners. ;)

What do y'all think about the guy with crossbow? I am pondering cutting it off and replacing it with a hand that has a finger pointing.

I gotta make more bases for these 2. I might even do a unit filler.

I painted base blue and highlighted it to lighter blue towards the foot. Put a wash over it.
Then I put a layer of silicone as I felt I needed to build up the texture. You don't need to for this shallow of water but I wanted to try it out.
Then I added the second layer. Silicone is pretty easy to work with. Once it was slightly tacky I shaped the waves and splash on the foot with a toothpick. Then I added some white(very faint tint of blue) to the crest of the waves - do this while it is still tacky so the paint mixes in with the silicone.

So I've been slowly creeping along with my dark elves force. Building AND painting.

Building does take a while as most of these guys requires exact placement in the [lexicon]unit[/lexicon].

Here is some updates. Almost done painting the Greatsword guys(finish the swords, some eyes and other minor details) and the witch elves(finish white highlights on hair and then add water effects on base).

the archers in the back I had to re-position a few arms and do some touch up paint work. The [lexicon]Dark Raiders[/lexicon] on the right are a pretty cool kit. Although with the amount of armour they have on I'd rather use them as [lexicon]Highborn Lancers[/lexicon].

I especially love the Avatars of War and their bases! Great to think of them frenzied running across a lake to close on their opponent as quickly as possible.

My first Drake is done. Or young dragon. I prefer to call them drakes.
Bases I ordered 8months ago have not arrived.
The rider I have not selected for this guy yet. Just wanted to get at least 1 drake done.

I plan on doing 6 so far. I got parts for more. Thinking of doing all sorts of conversions with these drakes.

Still not sure what base size to put them. 40mm is a bit small but is good to use them for dark pegasus. ....not that I would have 6 dark pegasus characters in a T9A army. So i might just put them on 50mm bases and make a cool unit. Their bases all link together to show they are flying over a ship deck or smashed ship on rocks in water.
....not like i have to glue it to the bases though. Could just find a way to magnetize, would be better for transport too.

I think i will magnatize!

Thanks for all the comments! Really helps with motivation.
