Dread Elf Background
Dread Elves

Dread Elves are a harsher reflection of their brethren. The same grace, the same beauty, the same talent, yet the detachment of the Highborn turns to disdain, the caprice of the Sylvan turned to cruelty. Their skills as pirates and reavers are unparalleled; entire coastal communities have fallen to cruel blade and ingenious artillery. The survivors soon find themselves aboard slave galleys and sold to worse fates still.

Their society was forged by war, and shaped further still by an unending feud with their Highborn cousins, a conflict which began with the separation of the Elves thousands of years ago, and shows no sign of ending. Even the gods of the Elves, the holy trinities, have taken on a darker note – blood rituals are widely described by rescued captives of the Dread fleets. Whatever the causes of that conflict, its echoes linger, and with the longevity of Elves, perhaps there are still those who recall the events and maintain ancient enmities. Pag 139

“The Great Ocean divides Vetia from the two western continents, Silexia in the north and Virentia in the south. The Ocean itself is the dominion of elves: there the fleets of the two great nations, the Highborn and their dreaded kin, vie for the supremacy. Here lies the main motherland of the Highborn Elves, the proud islands of Celeda Ablan, and Silexia where freedom is a commodity to be traded.” Pag 124

The question isn't who is going to let me; it's who is going to stop me.
— Barac Darkhelm, in The Virtue of Selfishness, a seminal text on Dread Elf ethics. Pag 106

There is only one true law: the strongest prevail. We are the agents of nature’s selection, and today we deliver judgment on those unworthy of life!
— Dac Aebha, Oracle of the Cult of Nabh. Pag 96

Also in the Word Hymn (start in pag 126) there are some pieces where speak about elves.

Well, T9A can't release background very fast.
Worst issue is layout.

Who cares about layout? We want stories to fall in love with (and characters, places, cultural traditions and so on). It's good some of the materials look mind-blowingly professional but not everything has to.

I think a series of ten short stories would portray the world far better than the whole rulebook does.

I agree. But I am not the decision-maker.
My intention is to argue with the scarcity of layout specialist and designers for more background released just in plain text.
From intention to realization, however...

In other words, they're so caught up in making sure the presentation is right they've overlooked the idea of just GETTING IT OUT THERE, in plain text files if that's all they've got.

Calisson: Fingers crossed for you. I know from own experience that such discussions can be quite exhausting - if there is a discussion at all. I have the feeling that the background team expects so fierce opposition that they want to avoid all non-internal discussions.

Vulcan: Well, I understand them to an extent - they probably fear that we would eat them alive if their work is not absolutely perfect in every possible aspect. Which is partly the case. However, I agree with you that their policy of hiding behind thick walls 99% of the time is not really helping.

So instead they've given us literally nothing more than a summary of everything GW wrote about Dark Elves?

Oh dear. I hope they are not going to try and pretend that a society based on Randian Objectivism is actually workable...

Ideally, Randian Objectivism is about enlightened self-interest and remembering that the other is no different than you. From a business standpoint, remembering that your employees can take the training you give them and go elsewhere with it is a strong motivation to treat them well, by Randian standards.

Unfortunately, as with Christianity, the other is often forgotten for the sake of self and self-righteousness.

But this probably isn't the place to discuss it...
