To me it seems Shadow is absolutely essential if your army relies on infantry getting into combat. Seeing as combat is now all about big blocks fighting it out for several turns, our elves will get hit no matter what. Ensuring that what hits us does as little damage as possible is paramount in a dra...

Well we'll always struggle against massed shooting (T3 does that to you...) but with the 5+ cauldron ward and with some shadow magic to reduce BS or chill wind, and with other threats on the board they'll eat their share of missiles (and won't run away). If you get a pegasus rider, harpies and dark ...

They're not as middle of the road as your comment suggests, Red. With a dreadlord in them they can take on most elite units (save death stars) and defeat or whittle them down seriously. Middle of the road (in my eyes) are empire greatswords - not good enough to go play with the big kids (stat and eq...

Unless facing something really elite where I want to minimize return attacks, I go as wide as necessary to maximize my own attacks. For example, against a horde of 30 flagellants one game I went 12 wide. Really bloody combat, but I prevailed and the enemy unit was dead after 3 rounds (almost got hi...

Taking into account the suggestions I"ve done some tinkering and came up with this: Dreadlord (goes in Black Guard) -Armor of Darkness -Pendant of Khaeleth -Crimson Death Supreme Sorceress - Level 4 - Sacrificial Dagger (Lore of Shadows) Sorceress - Ruby Ring of Ruin - Dispel Scroll (Lore of De...

I've been agonising over the dreadlord - it's a cool model and I like the idea. More importantly, I put him in the unit so it can take on another elite unit with a lord level fighter in it. On their own the black guard seem a bit... meh. Lots of armor piercing attacks and such but it feels like I'd ...

I been trying to think about the list while writing it...

After suffering a horrendous defeat against Vampire Counts a couple of days ago (the only thing I killed that stayed dead was a corpse cart), I went back to the drawing board (well, excel anyway - brilliant for playing with army lists by the way - who needs army builder?) and came up with something ...

@Calisson: WTF? What the ... is this Dark Rider trick?! I MUST USE IT! Only to see his face the first time he sees how I abuse the rules and see his unit getting flancked by something like executioners with asf banner. I wouldn't call it abusing the rules, its just using the rules well. It is only ...

Because they're elves and as such have a high ballistic skill. You won't find BS3 elves in our book just as much as you won't find high toughness elves (except Malekith).

Yeah, I hate terrorgheists, they're really nasty. I just realised we played it wrong and they're only 6+ regen (if the GW website is correct). Makes them much easier to deal with. I like me crossbows, and it looks like they've just found their favorite target. \ I had actually recently thought to m...

This trend started with O&G and has ever been confirmed since. Still, the special character are likely to get the characterful magic objects. The idea seems to converge all books towards a similar level of power. Thing is, I don't tend to use special characters because they're either stupidly o...

Yeah, sure, the unit could turn on the sorceress and kill her before she sacrifices any more guys. Would YOU want to return to Naggarond and face the Coven of Ghrond afterwards? What Drainial said... you could just make it look like an "accident". The running away idea seems the more like...

Slave type models

So I've been thinking about the whole level 4 Sorceress with sacrificial dagger, but I can't abide the idea of her sacrificing models in her own unit. I'm sure she'll manage once, and perhaps twice, but after that I can imagine the warriors being overcome with one of two desires - stab her, or run. ...

True, the odds aren't great. But tournaments seem to be moving towards open list, so your opponent knows about it. And getting 5+ two or three times on 5 dice isn't all that unlikely. Won't be a sure shot to take out the mage but it should make it easier to take him out subsequently. I'm not sold on...

8th edition shuffled all cards, no longer are DE among the top tier as such top tier no longer exists. Yeah I noticed that too when, for the first time I remember, a new army book was actually rebalanced instead of just making it more powerful in 8th edition - talking about Empire here. I was extre...

One thing I've been thinking is using the feedback scroll. 5+ to inflict a wound doesn't seem that much at first, but the (few) games I've played have highlighted a certain tendency to throw a few low level spells at the opponent to burn away dispel dice and then throw 4 or 5 at something you really...

So I'm back...

G'day folks... Maybe someone here remembers me. It's been a while but I dusted off my dark elves and started playing again, and I must say I'm rather enjoying 8th edition after not being so fond of it at the start. That and a lack of opponents in WHFB led me to quit fantasy and get quite heavily int...

I can sell you the warriors and crossbowmen if you like, although I'm in Australia so postage might be a concern. I've also got some of the witch elves (about 15, I think, although painted) and the sorceress.

Let me know if you're interested and I'll come up with a price.

Shades this edition are pretty much on par with Mengil's fellas. You also cannot use them in this edition any more unless your opponent lets you (so they're a no go for tournies). They also have to follow all the rules in the white dwarf so their RxB don't get AP (guess they weren't around when the ...

Firstly, combat squads are bad. They go down too easily. 5 power armoured marines aren't very survivable in any situation, much less if they're holding an objective. The way I would run tactical squads (I play SW so I don't have them) is to have them engage in short range firefights. Get the buggers...

No. For using sacdag, you'll get an electronic slap in the face and will be banned for life. Generally, I'm not sure it's worth it.
