The CoB is by no means mandatory, its a great choice, if you have witches and execs to make stubborn, but those 200+ points can just as easily be spent elsewhere.

I personally make do with a level 2 sorceress with an extra spell for my army buffs and only rarely lose a game

I'd go for 3 lvl 2s, if you really want to go heavy. Thats 6 spells, just like the lvl 4 and lvl 2 combo, but you get an extra casting of Power of Darkness thrown in the mix, and losing one won't cost you too much. I love my 30 man exec horde too. But I wouldn't give them a bsb - they're expensive enough already.

I usually just run them with the CoB blessing - though once in a while, I stick a CC Assassin in them just for kicks

I wouldn't horde any DE units, except for executioners. They're just too expensive, and you gain very little from the extra points.
