Re: What's the general idea on Dread Elves in 9th?
I just miss being able to take DE and do ANYTHING. MSU, Big blocks of whatever, gun/magicline, avoidance/shooting, just about anything worked with DE. Well, except 'take a bigger hammer and walk straight up the middle'. You'd get your head handed to you if you weren't careful with maneuvering with a...

Re: What's the general idea on Dread Elves in 9th?
Amen, brother! That's become the single worst thing about 9th Age thus far. The whole 'supersecretbutit'sgoingtobefantastic' fluff. Although taking the most flexible 8E army and turning it into deathstar central (either Tower Guard or Raptor Knights + characters + altar) - and even then it underperf...

Re: How to Paint Minies to look like Marble
I've seen tutorials online, you should be able to hunt one down reasonably easily. The gist of it is, once you get your clean basecoat down (and it doesn't have to be white, marble comes in many colors), you add a little of the 'marbling' color to the base color and paint mid-thickness bands across ...

Look forward to a small to moderate power boost soon. The DE performed VERY poorly at the ETC.

Re: [PLOG] Har Ganeth XIII Legion
Not with NMM techniques. I have the old GW paints for the most part. Base with Scab Red, first highlight in Red Core, second in Blood Red. Feather the edges of the highlights wherever possible. I like using Gryphonne Sienna as a final glaze to bring everything together and define the shading better....

Re: (Re)building my Dark Elves: don't know where to start
Before we can advise you, we need to know if the local scene is still playing Warhammer Fantasy Battles (and what edition), or have they moved on to the 9th Age rules. The two are quite similar (9th Age being, in it's most essentials parts, WFB with the serial numbers filed off), but there are large...

Re: Supplies!
I thought the old GW golds worked just fine. But then, I'd layer up from tin bitz or dwarf bronze up through to a mix of mithril silver and burnished gold for the top highlights.
I haven't had a chance to play with the new GW metals yet; haven't yet run out of the old ones.

The skintones in that first set of pictures looks very grey to me too. That last picture shows the browns much better.

Re: So about that magic
IF it's priced appropriately his method should work just fine, as it doesn't negate the advantages of two L2s, it just gives you a reason to take an L4 instead.

Re: So about that magic
I STILL think the way to do it is to go back to the old way. Double six is irresistible force with no miscast... but double ones miscasts, prevents the spell from going off, AND overrides irresistible force. Do that and a LOT of the problems with even 8E magic rules goes away.

Re: Gold Paint Advice
I prefer to save Brass Balls for items that are, you know, brass. Buckles, brass instruments, the like. Base with Shining Gold, layer with Brass Balls, top highlight with 1/3 mix of Mithril Silver and Burnished Gold, final glaze to bring it all together and you have a very different look from gold, ...

You might have done better with Gryphonne Sienna wash. It's a vaguely reddish brown.

Re: Gold Paint Advice
Layering is important. Gold over white or black basecoats just doesn't work. I start with a metallic brown (similar to the old Tin Bitz), then highlight up through Shining Gold, Burnished Gold, and do an extreme edge higlight of 25/75 Mithril Silver/Burnished Gold (more Mithril than that completely ...

I just smoothed a layer of greenstuff over the scales on the cloaks of handbow corsairs. Paint the cloak suitably cloth-y and done.

Re: First 8th Ed game with Dark Elves
A bit of tactical advice (a wee bit too late). You don't match up Executioners against Swordmasters. You send... well, pretty much anything that still strikes first against swordmasters. Witches, for example, tear them apart. Executioners go after the stuff S3/4 struggles to kill - high toughness an...

Re: Dealing with fast hard hitters
In 8E, I would routinely use two units each of Warlocks, Dark Riders, Harpies, Shades, and screening units of either Witches or Corsairs. Ten chaff units goes a long way toward blunting mobile heavy hitters.

Re: Calculating Points Values For Hypothetical Models / Unit
Of course, such a linear calculation doesn't work all that well in WFB. S4 gains beneifts beyond S1-3 in that it reduces armor. S7 is big because it wounds T5 monsters on a 2+. Strength in general has a bigger impact on models with high WS and A. And a model with low I may find out it doesn't matter...

With the elimination of 'not-Witches' as a viable option - much less a CORE option - Corsairs have replaced them in my armies. The loss of striking power is made up for (marginally) by their resilience.

While I'm no Wood Elf fan, I think it would be quite valuable to the hobby as a whole to keep Arasai up and running in some form or another.
Option two sounds like the best.
