You know it's gonna be a LOOOOONNNNG game when...

My buddy was talking about things that you KNOW are going to make a game painful. Just make you want to pass and move on. My only contributions were:

'When your 3000 point Ogre opponent shows up with half of his Core as Gnoblars'

'When you declared all the Charges successfully in round 2, and you find out the Vortex you cast in Round 1 has just headed right through at least half of them'

(Admittedly, that makes it a short game- but it FEELS long)

'When your Cauldron is getting chased around by a unit that can shoot but cannot Charge'

When you roll 2d6 for terrain and you end up with 5 rivers, 3 woods and 4 obstacles. So much for your all-cavalry army...

When your orc player is still setting up after you got all 6 of your units +charecters set up.

When the 40K people keep rolling extra turns.

When you both realise you've forgotten to bring a tapemeasure and only have a single 15cm/6 inch ruler between the two of you ;)

When you both realise you've forgotten your dice box and only have a single dice between the two of you...bring on the RxB multishots!

When it is 14:00, you came to the local club up for the 6000 pts vs 6000 pts mammoth game organised by e-mail, and you're alone with the shopkeeper.

See, but that's a WIN! lol

When you roll 3 obstacles that cross the board except for an inch and count as Impassable or Dangerous in the Battle for the Pass (no really. They NEVER want to be the first to cross!)

When the only things on the board are tanks and gaunts

Your opponent decides to roll all his to wound rules against your ethereal models, even though he can't actually wound them...

Your Level 4 blows himself/herself up with a S10 miscast on Turn 1.....

When my opponent says 'so run me through which of your models are which.'

(My army contains a mixture of old and new models, as well as some non-GW figures, so requires a bit more explaining a than fully new GW only army)

I only play long games my main opponnent (good mate though) takes for ever with.. well everything. Doesnt know the profiles of his units CC are the worst.. gathers up his dices. (lets say second round of combat)
him : "So First.."
me: "to hit mate, using the weapon skill"
him: yeah yeah of course
"So weapon skill" ...erm ..
me: still need to roll a four..
him: .... ehm yeah cause mine got a weaponskill 4 and yours got a weaponskill 4
so i need a four..
*closses his, moves lips sillently as he convinces his dices to be 4's* and rolls
Him: so now ..
Me: to wound
Him: my strength versus..
me : toughness you... still... need 3's
*me pouring another scotch*
and dont get me started on his magic phase, being a dwarf player at hart, him using tomb kings orcs and goblins adds another hour or 2 to a game.
His not a bad player either, composes a decent list sometimes even nasty... it just takes him forever!

XD van Awful, your post made me laugh. I've been there. It's even worse when they can't remember basic rule dynamics though, so that once they've established your WS and their WS for example, they still don't know what they need to roll....

I don't see anything funny there.
I still struggle to remember what I need to roll for hitting and wounding. Fortunately, my sons are better than me.
Well, suddenly, I'm wondering whether it might be why ALL our games are so LOOOOONNNNG?

When you try teaching your friend who used to play LoTR, Warhammer Fantasy, because he thought they would be similar.

haha i'm sure you can work out a pattern to help remember them. Not remembering stats slows games down considerably, especially when you can't find the relevant profile quickly or efficiently either!

Why, you mean some people actually do remember stats?
That's crazy impressive, that would be like requiring people to know the effects of spells without needing to check the BRB each time they consider casting - or dispelling - a spell.
Or do they? :?

You know it's going to be a long game when they keep arguing about the same rule for the last three turns.

haha i'm sure you can work out a pattern to help remember them.

If your WS is more than your opponent's WS, you hit on 3s.
If your WS is either equal to or more than half of your opponent's WS, you hit on 4s.
If your WS is less than half of your opponent's WS, you hit on 5s.

If your S is two or more higher than your opponents T, you wound on 2s
If your S is one higher than your opponent's T, you wound on 3s
If your S is the same as your opponent's T, you wound on 4s
If your S is one lower than your opponent's T, you wound on 5s
If your S is two or more lower than your opponent's, your wound on 6s

Your basic to-hit role is 7 minus your BS. Other modifiers then apply (e.g. -1 for soft cover, -2 for hard cover, -1 for long range)

Armour penetration equals the S of the attack minus 3.

Most races have base statlines that you can use as short cuts. With DE, for example,
our troop base statline is M5, WS4, BS4, S3, T3, I5, W1, A1 and Ld8.
our elites then may have one or more of the following statline changes (WS+1, BS+1, S+1, I+1, A+1, Ld+1).

I'm with Red here, it's actually really easy to remember stats and the To Hit/Wound tables. I've had them memorized since 8th came out, did the same with 7th and 6th too. Dark Elf stats are the easiest to remember too, which means you basically know High Elves and Wood Elves too.
