How Did You Do In 'Ard Boyz?

Post by L'etat c'est moi »

I qualified in a small field, and learned a ton based off what others are running.

The third mission was brutal. In five turns lightning was rolled four turns. This lead to both hydras, my BSB Cauldron of Blood, and two full units of Cold One Knights dying without seeing battle.

How did the rest of the Witch King's army fair?

I ended in Second Place. I ran a level 4/level 2 sorceress list - all death spells. I had double hydras and a 12 strong CoK unit. Sacrifical Dagger/Power of Darkness is an extremely combination.
Overall:
Round 1 vs. DE - He ran a double hydra bolt thrower army. Wacky stuff. His sorceress split dark/death (level 4/2). It was not effective. Even so, he ran a gazillion dark riders in units of 5 all over the map and did a great job of controlling my charges. As a result, we fought to a draw after I sorceressed him to death.

Round 2 vs Skaven. Two doom wheels and endless jezzails made me wonder why I bothered playing. His warfire cannons and misc. shooting was stunning on round one. I decided to just go for it and charged everywhere I could. I managed to double hyrda blast his biggest unit with the blood soaked choppa, then sniped his leaders in an amazing round of magic. That turned the tables to a massacre.

Round 3 vs Teclis.
He had a 60 man unit of halbadiers with an anti magic banner and Teclis. Its unkillable. His other unit was 50 archers. Everything else was bolt throwers. I could not fight him to a win, so I controlled the charges to keep him away from the vortex at the center. At the end, he was forced to concede a draw even though I had just about nothing left.

@Letat. He WILL be at Fantasy Flight in semis. I don't know how you will handle this.

Well, over all fun. Later!

I placed second, though I could have gotten first if the area of the portal had been more clearly defined. (I set up right next to what I thought was the base, but apparently that wasn't it. )

Faced:
A) Dwarfs, with way too many heroes. My CoK unit ended up losing steam due to bad rolls against the only large block, but I managed to keep him from getting too many points. Minor victory for him.

B) Ogres. 12 Ironguts with characters, 3 units of Bulls. Took care of the Bulls with most everything else while I delayed the Ironguts, though my Corsairs didn't do as well with the Blood-soaked Choppa as I wished. Took them out later with a flank charge from CoK however.

C) Teclis High Elves with lots of spearmen. Successfully cordoned off one block of spearmen and set up to rape the two others, but game ended before I could finish anything. Auto-draw.

Came in first, three massacres - 70 points. Though I feel terrible about it. After using Dark Elves to make it all the way through last year's Hard Boyz, I caved in and borrowed a friend's Demon army and played it for the first time yesterday. Not as point and click as I was expecting but Ld mitigation beats hordes any day.

Opponents were Orcs and Goblins, Dark Elves, and Orcs and Goblins again. The Dark Elf player was the toughest opponents. The two Orcs and Goblins would have smashed my Dark Elves (too many warm bodies to kill) but Doom and Darkes + Masque + Banner of Despair let me carve through 100+ sized units.

Finished 3rd, did a full writeup on my gaming blog - http://blackarkapathy.blogspot.com/

Used the list I posted here, but swapped Death for Dark -
http://www.druchii.net/viewtopic.php?t=68151

The short version - one draw against DE, one loss to WoC, one victory against HE.

Highlights - my DE opponent ran a unit of 65 Corsairs with Lokhir, the Crone, a Dreadlord, and his BSB with ASF banner. The 3rd scenario was terrible.

Does anyone know if we are allowed to make list changes between now and the next round?

Madkins, nice write up. That second matchup sounded like an exercise in watching things go wrong. At least it wasn't a Chaos Dwarf constantly pounding you with 4 Earthshakers and subsequently turning your army into a 3" inch a turn slow moving target. Which GT are you prepping for in June - Quake City Rumble or Throne of Skulls?

How did most of you resolve scenario three in the case of both sides having a character on the portal? Reading the rules, I thought that if you both had a character present, neither of you could claim the portal -> world ends -> draw. The 'neither can claim' logic being that you had to both have a character present AND have no enemy present on the portal to claim.

Just curious because it didn't come up at our tournament - either one guy was king of the hill or a combination of lightning bolts/tsunamis/general mayhem left both sides unable to claim victory.

Quake City Rumble.

Re-reading the scenario I think we actually may have done it wrong and you've got the right idea. We just disregarded it and totaled up points as normal if both players had a character in base. Looks like we should have scored it a draw.

They do three 'ard Boyz per year in the US.
Nothing has to be painted, 3000 points. Its straight up beat downs. You will see the best and worst in gamers during the tourney. For example the old famous argument over "red ones go fasta" (If you move 13 inches you must forfiet the game as the rule adds UP TO an inch of movement, not an inch of movement, so 12.9999999 is legal and 13 is not) originated at an 'ard Boyz, for example (from 40K). Still, if you can find a decent enough group to play in, the prelims are fun and the prize support is very good. I got $30.00 in GW for 2nd in the prelims. Semi's gives out a 2000 point army of choice for top place. 1st in nationals and I think Dan Abnett writes you your own novel or something stupid. Dunno. I like 'em, over all!

Ard Boys is all about going into it with the correct mindset. It isnt a tournament for soft scores and fun people. It's a tournament designed at bringing out the worst in some people. I still had tons of fun in my prelim

Got 1st with an absolutely dirty Dark Elf list against a field of 8 who brought Teclis, Dwarven Gunlines from hell and Chosen stars.

Still debating if I want to make the 6 hour drive to the semi-final.

Seeing as you could meet me, then yes: you could meet the worst of them.

Dan Abnett writes me a novel?? I wish. I won last year and the prizes were:

Prelimes: $60 of product at the retail store where the game was held.

Semi-Finals: 3000 point army of your choosing. I chose Empire I got 3 battalion boxes, 2 steam tanks, 2 cannon sets, mage set, general set, pair of priests, and a volleygun/rocket battery set. So, you choose the flavor, they send you some mix of stuff that more or less would field as 3000.

Finals: $300 online voucher and a large axe.

Yeah, odd that the semi-finals netted a better prize than the finals but there you go.

Ya I'll share it since it wasn't a very innovative concept

Dreadlord on peg with pok, dragon helm, crown of command and soulrender
Supreme sorc with lvl 4, sac dagger, seal of ghrond, guiding eye. Death lore

Lvl 2 on horse with powerscroll and death magic.
CoB bsb
Master on peg with ring of hotek and cloak of hag graef.

35 warriors with musician and standard of discipline
20 rxb warriors with shields standard and musician
20 corsairs with musician, standard sea serpent standard
7 harpies

5 cold one knights with musician, standard and flaming banner

4 hydras.

Ya I went all out! And I am certainly glad I did with the cheese I faced

Lol that was EXACTLY the list I expected to see (even with the same equippment) XD

One question- how did the cauldron? Did you need him? How did you use him? I´m currently thinking of dropping him (in this list) for some more troops (for example BG or more CoK so that they´d be more than a hellpit killer and sorcress delivery unit).

Best Regards!

I always keep the cauldron. You are going to want a BSB no matter what and the T10 against shooting is indispensable at protecting her. Killing blow for Corsairs and +1 attack for Knights are perfect utility features that really make this list work IMO. I haven't had too much trouble with Aboms. A hydra or two usually do well against them depending on the random attack. 1 is always taken down by my Knights with +1 attack. A personal favorite is casting a souped up Soulblight from the center of my line. Makes Aboms a lot less scary against our equal cheese contender of the Hydra.
