All three small chambers suddenly became a whirlwind of motion and noise as the bat swarm poured forth from the hollow fireplace and engulfed the group. Saldrimek was taken completely off guard and quickly knocked to the floor, and Elysian was next in their path. The Mage was forced back into the larger chamber, chanting the first words of a bold enchantment as he moved. The bats moved over him, swarming Vryala until she released her grip on the ladder and then moving upwards, surrounding Fiat, Karonath and Phalx as well. Only the burning fires of the braziers in the archway to the library seemed to give the flying beasts pause, for none of them flew as further than the top of the hatch. Suddenly presened by hundreds of tiny foes without preperation or warning, the group reverted to their basic battle instincts and simply did the first thing that came to mind.

For Karonath and Fiat, that was hack and slash in as many possible directions as they could. For Phalx, it was to do the same with the bolts fired from his magical crossbow. Karonath chopped left and right, up and down with her Draich, almost unable to miss the black furred flesh and powerful wings of their numerous enemy. Fiat took his halberd into a shorter grip and tore the blade left and right at whatever bat came too close, embedding the cold steel in one flying body after another. Phalx let loose a wolf like howl as he raised Deathspitter into the air and pulled tight on the trigger, sending forth a salvo of bolts that immitated the gatling gun the skaven had used down in the sewers. Bolts flew into the ceiling in every direction, punching through bat body and wing along the way. Dozens of the bloodthirsty creatures dropped back to the floor, and where they hit the ground they burst in a puff of black magic smoke. In just a few moments the trio had cleared most of the air in the antechamber, but as their enemies became fewer they also became harder to hit, and more daring in their vicious dives that ended in needle-claw scratches or long fanged bites.

Down below the hatch, Elysian and Vryala followed the same base insinct, doing the first thing they could think of against the numberless enemy. The Warrior gripped the amulet of light, her shield now placed across her back, as she swept her bastard sword defiantly against the swarm. She thought back to the day they had purchased their amulets, all the way back in the City of Ghrond on their journey North into the Wastes. The stallkeeper had told them that touching the enchanted activation stud produced illumination, but gripping the amulet hard could produce a brilliant flash of golden light. Indeed, the amulet had already proved its worth on several occassions, and now Vryala put it to the test once again. At her command, a huge blast of brilliant white light filled the chamber, if only for a moment. The bats recoiled from the light with screeches and angry cries, many of them spiralling upwards and out through the hatch, others flapping about in confusion, momentarily blinded. Vryala snarled and set about hacking them down with her blade.

For Elysian, his instinct was to cast a spell, for he knew his martial prowess, while not to be frowned upon, was far from honed enough to fend off so many attackers all at once, however small they were. His arcane abilities however, were greater now than they had ever been, and already with the group he had been improving and refining his powers due to almost constant oppertunities to use them. Out in the wider world away from the group, he had to hide his powers and be subtle and cautious lest he find himself arrested, for the Witch Kings laws meant males could not practice magic. Here and now however, he felt brave enough to attempt something far greater. The wind of Ulgu dominated in the dark chamber alongside a heavy web of deep rooted Shyish energy, and the Shadow Mage drew it in upon himself and then cast out his hands. At his command, the shadows left in the moments after Vryalas blinding flash churned and grew darker. Fleeting tendrils and wisps of shadow snared at the flying bats, slowing their flight and sowing confusion amongst the swarm.

For Saldrimek, the moment after the swarms attack was a much different one. His grief fuelled rage had ended and his limbs now ached with the pain of all the jarring hits his blades had made on the bench and mirror. When the bats hit him he was simply dragged away from the fireplace with them, and now he lay on his back on the cold stone ground in a moment of clarity. His rampage was ended, if only for the moment, and Saldrimek saw for the first time that if he was to fight his way free he would have to do so with precision, not with simple rage. The Khainite chopped off the wings and heads of the first few bats to probe at his prone form, giving himself the time and space he needed to force himself back onto his knees and then up onto his feet. Standing inside the tempest of chittering, biting bodies, the Khainite began to take one step after another towards the archway out of the coffin chamber, taking down a bat with every careful stroke of his blades.

It was then that up on the floor above Fiat remembered something from past adventures with the group, in the times before his departure and return. He expressed his thoughts loud enough for all but Saldrimek to hear.

"Say, isn't this how Tvar usually makes her grand exits!? What if she comes home from the market the same way?"

The killing, at first, was rather easy. His halberd cutthrough dozens of the little flying rats, he almost enjoyed it.
As the room cleared, however, her noticed how the smaller numbers made them harder to hit. They had whittled them down, but finishing them off would be difficult...
Fiat also took notice to how they avoided fire. Breaking from his cover, Fiat bolted to the nearest source of fire, and looked for something to light, probably one of the books or scrolls.

Fiat will find something to light on fire and ward away the bats with.

Proving its worth once more, the Talisman's blast of light repelled the bats momentarily, allowing V to swing her blade with purpose and precision to cut down the flying vermin harassing her. Elysian followed up with a mighty spell, entangling the bats with tendrils of shadow. Sal was still in there; V knew her task and charged.

Vryala hacks her way to Saldrimek, then assists him in making his way back out. Sword wall!

Then she will never unpack her shopping.

There were now rather less of the bats ; as the crowd thinned it became harder to track her victims. K tried harder to watch and listen, and make shorter more accurate strokes.

OOC: Sorry for my lack of posts over the last day or so. I went i bit crazy and have just gotten over my madness.

IC: The bats were still swooping around. Are wild Shade discovered that very quick way to sober up, was to be attacked by such horrid large beasts. bolts from Deathspitter spat all around him, felling a few of the monsters, but still they flew about him. He roared with pain as the bit and clawed at him, this was no way to die.

Phalx will stop using Deathspitter, and will go to his sword, moving it around himself in small defensive arcs and circles.

The bats began to fall with every movement of his blade. This wasn’t rage he was feeling, no, it was something completely different, nothing feeling similar to it. He watched the bats movements more closely, he watched as their bodies twisted in the air and dived at him and he reacted with just a single swing of his scimitar, cutting the air as finely as he was cutting the bats. For Sal, he only knew how to watch the basic outline of his enemies, but now, he could watch and feel the bats movements as he studied their movement. Against an armed elf this might be different, but for Sal to feel this brand new sensation of combat style, it amazed him at how effective it was. He hadn’t suffered so much as a single scratch since he had picked himself up, unlike his rage induced form of combat that would assuredly leave him with aching joints and hideous scars from where he recklessly threw himself into the fray.

A burst of light caught Sal’s attention throughout the flapping cloud of winged fangs. It was his best bet for escape, seeing as he could barely remember where he was moving since he had been thrown onto the ground and engulfed in a cloud of angry bats. Another bat flew too close to his left and he felt himself carefully flick his scimitar to his side, rewarded with a splash of blood and a high squeal from the annoying creature. His only thought was to escape the mass and get back to his friends. He had shamed himself enough in front of them, to die now when they had seen him at his weakest would be going against everything he stood for.

Blood still trickled down from forehead and chin, deep scratches from where had had clawed at his own face etched across his forehead and cheeks. He felt his anger boil again within his mind at the thought of how many times Tvar had ambushed them with these hellish traps. Sal felt himself bare his teeth as he lapsed in concentration, then bit down hard again as he tried to refocus, carving his scimitar through the air as he made his way to the source of light.

Sal will try to keep a level head as he cuts his way through the bats towards the light he saw, trying to maintain the same level of precision and care to each blade swing as he was doing before.

Elysian grinned foolishly as his spell came off without a hitch, he had not cast such an enchantment in a very long time, he had not dared. The thickening darkness did not stop the bats entirely, he knew that was beyond him over such a large area, but it did slow them giving him and the others down below an advantage.

The only way to capitalise on this advantage though was to use it to retreat, there was no way to win down here, even killing all of the bats would earn them nothing more than the right to climb up the ladder in silence. As he battered another bat to the ground with his staff Elysian noticed that Saldrimek either could not or was not trying to break free but even as he considered helping the embattled Khainite Vryala dashed back past him already on her way. Figuring that she had the right idea Elysian followed at a slower pace, half his mind was still focused on keeping the spell in place and ensuring that the bats would not have an easy time of it. In the mundane world too he was persecuting the flying rodents with extreme prejudice using, twirling his long staff to strike at bats with both ends whenever they flew too close. Already he had a bead of blood running down his cheek from a slight gash but Saldrimek must surely be in worse straits than that. Following Vryala Elysian sought to help him win free.

Elysian will try and keep the spell firmly in place and advance with Vryala so that the three of them are all covered by the spell, he will also add his staff to the cause of freeing Saldrimek. He would like to retreat when they can do so together but won't run off alone.

OOC - Please remember Signature updates - Phalx is now on 14 crossbow bolts I believe. It's easier for everyone if you update your profile as soon as you finish reading my modpost, before you even reply - this way you shouldn't ever forget. I can't keep up to date with monitoring all 7 profiles, hence why I switched over to the "red text = do it yourself" method.

IC -

As Vryala activated the blinding flash of light from the amulet, dozens more bats recoiled from the light and spiralled up and out of the hatch. Just as they thought they had cleared most of the air about them, Karonath, Fiat and Phalx found themselves once again surrounded by the flapping wings of the bloodthirsty creatures. Fiat had observed the winged beasts avoiding the firelight of the archway and so leaped forwards and snatched one of the two burning braziers from the wall. He swept the fire around left and right, singeing the fur off swift moving bodies. He chopped his halberd around in a one handed grip as well, knocking one more bat after another out of the air. He too observed what happened to the beasts as they hit the ground, for they simply vanished in a tiny wisp of black smoke.

Still standing over the hatch, Karonath started to move her Draich in more accurate strokes as the number of bats was reduced, before a second wave of the chittering creatures rose up to flock around her and the guys. With a vicious grin she set about hacking them down once again, watching as Fiat took up a flaming brazier and started forcing the bats back her way. She twirled her Draich up and down, slicing through wings and black bodies and sending one bat after another spinning down onto the ground, where they burst apart as though formed completely of magic rather than flesh or blood. She responded to Fiats call, but even as she did so she realised the Warrior probably had a good point. Several times already Eaun had fled them by bursting into a swarm of magical bats. Perhaps now she was coming to attack them in the same fashion? The thought invigourated her swings, and before long she was back to cutting down the last few dozen bats with aimed strokes of Bloodfeathers keen blade.

Phalx was with them too, the Shade having spent a whole bolt of crossbow clips just to thin the masses but seemingly in vain. Dozens more bats rose up to attack them, and for once a moment of concern for the wellbeing of even Vryala crept into his mind. They were surrounded by the chittering bats and there was three of them, two of the groups best fighters amongst their number to boot. Vryala and Elysian were on their own and trapped down in the darkness, no doubt surrounded by an even greater number of the biting, scratching beasts. It was then that he caught on to what Fiat was shouting, the Warrior now waving a flaming brazier at the bats defiantly. The realisation that the bats might indeed be the Vampiress herself caused Phalx to snarl in fury, and he dropped his empty crossbow to the ground and took out his sword. Slicing left and right at the passing bats, the Shade made sure every stroke of his sword counted for the death of another of the damned creatures.

Every inch of their exposed flesh and the thinner parts of their armour now trickling with blood thanks to numerous cuts and bites, the three mercenaries hacked and slashed their way through the last of the bats in the antechamber.

Down below, Vryala stuffed the amulet of light back into one of the pouches about her belt, the use of its greater effect having now deactivated it completely. The amulet would remain useless now for longer than the fight would probably continue, for whatever enchanted properties it contained seemed to need time to recharge after long periods of use. She took her bastard sword in a two handed grip as the darkness once more enveloped her, knowing her shield was next to useless against the swarm of small enemies she now stood inside. Fortunately help was at hand, and a moment after she caught a glimpse of a flicking, sweeping light from up above the hatch, the shadows in the subchamber seemed to darken and constrict. Plunged into the dark yet again, the warrior let the glowing red eyes of her enemies tell her where to strike, and began to cut a path through in the direction of Saldrimek, silently thanking Elysian for his help.

The Mage moved up beside her, focusing his mind on keeping the spell he had successfully cast from collapsing back in upon itself. Fortunately the Wind of Ulgu still blew strongly throughout the chambers, but he could feel that with every bat they killed another wisp of Shyish energy joined the ever swirling mass of magic within the room. Ulgu was slowly losing its stronghold as Shyish sunk its talons further into the dark place, and with every passing heartbeat Elysian felt his grip on the spell fading. Even as he struck out left and right with both ends of his staff, he had to pour more and more will and focus into keeping a hold over his spell or he risked the magic turning back on him like a beast breaking free from its captors' shackles and chains. Together with Vryala the Shadow Mage smashed his way through the bats to the archway into the second chamber where Saldrimek fought, but then finally he felt his concentration slip.

A bat sunk its fangs into the side of his neck, having landed on his shoulder from above and behind, and as he smashed the butt of his staff into its face he felt the wisp of Shyish energy materialise in the air beside his head. The subtle difference in the winds was all it took, and just as he took another step forwards the Mage lost his hold on the widespread spell, feeling the tendrils of shadow magic he had been controlling suddenly spin wildly out of control. On the mundane plane, for Vryala and Saldrimek to see, the shadows in the chamber suddenly danced and moved as if caught in an unnatural gale. The bats were released from their strangleholds, but the effects of the breaking spell did not stop there. Long tendrils of dark shadow lanced out like crossbow bolts, some of them taking even more bats out of the air as others hit the chamber walls and dissipated without further effect. Vryala felt one of the dark bolts strike her in the back of the helmet, and instantly her vision was enveloped in darkness as the shadows blocked out her view of the chamber.

For Elysian, the effects of the spell spiralling out of control were even more dangerous than that. Not only did several of the shadow bolts seem to gain a will of their own and come hurtling his way in defiance of his former hold on them, but in the aether his mind was suddenly left weak and defenceless. Three dark bolts of the power crashed into his body, clouding each and every one of his natural senses and leaving him momentarily blind, dumb and deaf in the midst of the bats. The swooping blood drinkers swarmed on him in an instant, biting and scratching even more of his flesh away in the seconds that followed. But the pain of such injuries was beyond him, for now Elysian saw not the mortal world but the swirling miasma of magical energy that was the Winds. Long, strong waves of Ulgu writhed and fell apart, either dissapearing entirely or breaking apart into weaker strings that the other powers quickly overcame. Aqshy, Ghur, Dhar, Chamon and even Hysh all increased in power, but Shyish, already the strongest power in the room, surged to the surface now that its main competitor was out of the way.

The sudden influx of death energy invigourated the bats, giving them more speed and a deadlier bite.

In the final room, the smaller subchamber that had not long ago been the resting place of Eauns' dark coffin and a magical mirror, both now ruined by Saldrimeks' outburst of rage, the Khainite battled on. Saldrimek strode through the masses of bats and cut left and right with well aimed strokes of his scimitars, only taking the occasional scratch of a bats claws in return where before he had let them swarm over him, simply hacking at them with a red mist over his senses. A flash of light a few moments before had given him a quick glimpse of his surroundings, and he now moved towards the archway with every step. Even as he cut them down, he noticed the bats suddenly become slower and easier to hit, something in the air seeming to spoil their flight and sow confusion amonsgt them. In the moments of clarity that followed Saldrimek leapt about like an acrobat, each move of his lethal dance ending in an outstretched sword that cut another bat from the air. Before long he had thinned the swarm enough to see again, but still a hundred or more bats flocked about the ceiling, diving at him in turn with their long vampiric fangs ready to bite.

A sudden tremour of power passed through the air from the room beyond, and for a moment Saldrimek thought Elysian was casting another spell to help him out. What instead happened, however, was that the shadow mist pinning the bats in the air unravelled and dispersed, allowing the creatures to once again flock over him and start biting at his skin. Every needle like fang took a drop of his blood away, and before long the Khainite was dripping blood from another set of dozens of tiny wounds. His scimitars continued to slash at the bats with speed and accuracy, but a moment after the apparent downfall of the Mages' spell the bats seemed to become even more swift and deadly than they had been in the first place. Bat after bat dove onto the Khainite and took a taste of his blood, and for every one that he cut down two more seemed to come at him from the darkness. As they got more powerful the bats suddenly became much harder to hit, and Saldrimek felt every slash of his blades growing more frantic than the last.

Struggling to keep a grip on his focus, Saldrimek felt every bite on his skin that took a drop of his blood add another drop to the red mist that was creeping back into his vision. The rage was coming back.

With the bats around his general area clearing, Fiat started to sigh a relief, thinking the worst of it was over and the encounter was almost wrapped up, but from down below, Fiat could hear the chittering of more bats and the grunts of an extended combat. They were still fighting a horde of the flying beasts and it didn't seem to be going well.

Can you two handle up here? He asked Phalx and Karonath.
Not waiting for an answer, Fiat put his halberd away and headed down to the chambers below.

Switches to sword & torch and heads down to help out the others.

With that last burst of illumination, the Talisman had expended itself for the time being and V quickly stuffed it. She'd made it to Sal's side though, meaning they could together mount a structured retreat, hacking apart bats every step of the way, but the sudden lack of light was pretty unnerving. Then, Elysian's arcane tendrils of shadow suddenly seemed to flicker wildly out of control, and Vryala backed off with a little more urgency, unsure of what to expect. A couple more rodents died but too late did she see one tendrils coming straight for her, striking her right on the head and, to her horror, blinding her completely.

She snarled in anger and panic, and lashed about with her sword while fumbling for a grenade with the other hand. She knew Elysian to be behind her, and Sal at her side. A few flames here and there wouldn't hurt them and, she hoped, help them see without the Talisman's aid.

Blinded, V should still have a residual overview of the chamber's layout - she chucks a firebomb to the far end and hopefully fry some of these little bastards.

OOC: Damn, I had a good streak going on non missed posts. Guess it will have to end here. Sorry that I can’t make this post, in a real rush with work and car pooling. I might be in time to post a bit later. Sorry for the inconvenience.

EDIT:

IC:

The bats suddenly attacked with a renewed vigour, taking bites at his exposed flesh and with each drop of blood he lost he felt himself fly into more of a desperate rage. The rage itself bit at the corners of his mind, oozing its way back into his fighting style, his attacks getting more wild and chaotic. He felt his arms loosen in rigidity slightly as another bat took a bit at his arm, his arms turning more into a whirlwind of blades then the precise strokes he was doing before. Suddenly, throughout the cloud of bats, Vryala appeared not too far off. She fumbled at her belt for a flame grenade and Sal immediately caught onto what she was about to do. His mind on the very edge of frenzy again, Sal hardened his resolve and bit back the pain, trying with all his might not to lose himself again when he was so close to his friends.

Sal will try to barge through the bats while trying to keep a level head about things. Don’t want to lose myself again so close to a blinded Vryala.

To be a mage was to live between two worlds; half spirit and half flesh, half god and half insect, half mad. Moving forwards Elysian felt Ulgu throbbing in his veins and he delighted in this heightened sense of his own power. Why did he not stretch himself more often? Why did he hide his power away?

The answer came shortly thereafter, the fickle winds shifted, Shyish ascended to topple Ulgu completely and his tenuous hold over the spell cracked and splintered. For a moment he held on try to end the spell safely but it was not to be and with a pain that threatened to split his skull asunder it shattered. The shards flew in all directions and he knew that they would be dangerous to his companions, they might both die for his hubris, on the other hand the results of his misspell would focus on him, for better or worse.

A tendril struck him squarely on the chest and all sight fled, two more impacts rocked his body and he fell to the floor, deaf, blind and mute. All that was left was touch and all that he could feel was pain. The lacerating bites’ of the bats were almost drowned out by the thrashing ties within his mind that had until moments ago been at the centre of a complex web of energy.

Groaning, though he knew it not, Elysian tried to get up. This was not his first misspell and he knew that the effects would fade but unless he recovered quickly it might well be his last.

Elysian will try to get to his feet or failing that to his knees and fend off the bats as best he can with sweeps of his staff while he is waiting for his senses to return.

The bats were still snapping and biting, their screeching cries echoing oddly in the chamber. He was covered in scraps of matted fur and flesh, and doused in trickles of his own blood. His sword flashed and snapped around him, attacking wherever he could. He heard Fiat say something, but it was mostly lost over the sounds of the bats. Tiring and bleeding, the shade fought on.

Phalx will continue to slice through the bats, keeping his attacks short and on the defensive side.

She was about to start looking around and watching where she was swinging - when even more bat swarmed up out of the trap. She stood firm and plowed on, twirling about nearly mad with wiolence and sheer enjoyment while the little fly-rats fell about her. Once again she found the crowd somewhat thinned, and started to shorten her strokes and look about. It struck her right now that there were no bodies on the ground - and there went the last of her doubts, and very nearly the fuse that burned always went with it. But she only jumped a little.

She looked about her. She could hear that there was clearly a lot more bats down below. She saw Fiat holding one of the braziers in his hand. Just now she wondered at the folly of the three below not taking a light with them. Well she would fix that.

K will take her sword in one hand and the other brazier in her other, and get she downstairs.

OOC - Happy Halloween

IC -

The battle with the bat swarm was getting more intense with every passing moment despite the group cutting more and more of the creatures from the air. Every bat cut from the air hit the ground or walls and burst apart in a flare of dark energy, removing all doubt that these were no mere natural scavangers of the night. Whatever they were, Tvar was controlling them, be it another host of her undead minions or the nightmarish fragments of the Vampiress herself. Above the hatch, Fiat, Karonath and Phalx had fended off another wave of the blood hungry attackers, but now they faced the problem of getting their friends back out of the chambers below before it was too late. Without a second thought, Fiat called to the others to hold the antechamber and then dropped through the hatch, flaming brand in one hand and sword in the other. Karonath saw him go and, with a mumbled "Oh no you don't!" she snatched the other brazier from the wall and followed him down into the darkness.

Phalx was left as the only member of the group on the second floor, the Shade standing over the hatch and swinging his sword left and right at the last dozen bats as they circled and dived at him. His companions had taken the braziers that had been lighting up the room, and now the only light he had to see with was the flaming eyes of the skull atop the mantlepiece. The Shade dodged to the left as another bat swooped down and clawed at his shoulder, swinging out with his sword to slice the beast in two. Another bat was about to sink its clawed feet into his face, diving at him with its limbs outstretched in attack, but he thrust his punch dagger straight through it, bursting it into a cloud of black magic. Three more bats attacked him now, coming at him together from different angles. As soon as Karonath had dropped down the hatch the last of the bats seemed to become more frenzied, and even as he hacked down one of those that landed on him another four closed in. A moment later the Shade was covered in the snapping bats, the creatures sinking their long claws into his skin for purchase. Blinded by the body of a bat and with his hands pinned by more of the flying fiends, Phalx cursed and struggled as the bats bit into his neck, arms and chest, flailing in their grip.

And then, half because he was somewhat drunk and half because he couldn't see, the Shade put a foot over the open hatchway... and down he fell.

In the doorway to the coffin chamber, Vryala and Elysian were blinded by the effect of the Mages spell falling apart. The Mage went down to the ground, his every sense envelloped by the shrouding darkness that had turned on him, but Vryala resolutely managed to stay on her feet. Even so blinded as she was, the warrior remembered where Saldrimek was standing several feet in front of them in a cloud of bats, and grabbed a firebomb from a pouch at her waist. In front of her, Saldrimek slashed left and right at the bats before him with a snarl of effort, or perhaps of impending rage. At that moment however, as his scimitars cleared the air between him and his blinded friends, the Khainite steeled himself and bit back the urge to lose control. Instead, he threw himself to the left, into the corner of the chamber beside the archway where Vryala stood. He didn't have time to ask about the strange shadows that seemed to be wrapped around his companions' faces, for still the bats were swarming over him.

The blackpowder bomb left Vryalas' hand just as Elysian forced himself back onto his knees, elbowing a bat off the back of his neck and then swinging his staff around to knock a few more away from himself. The Mage rose back to his feet just as the firebomb hit the wall beside the mirror, and the whole chamber was engulfed in a roaring ball of flame. Bats shrieked and burned, simply bubbling away in thin air and only leaving a wisp of darkness in their place which promptly faded from existance. Even blinded and deafened from the noise of the explosion, Elysian felt the wave of heat hit his face and instinctively leaped back into the chamber with the hatch. Vryala, once again proving herself as she still could not see, took a step towards the flames turned her back, her hands lifting the corners of her sea dragon cloak so that it shrouded both her and Saldrimek. A moment later the explosion was over, and scores more of the bats had been killed.

Vryala blinked furiously as her vision steadily returned over the span of the next few seconds, and then took a glance back into the larger chamber to check on the Mage.

Elysian stood amidst a whirlwind of bats, heavy shadows still clinging to his face and shrouding his senses, but as Vryala and Saldrimek watched one fiery light-trail and then another dropped into the near pitch black room. It took them a moment to realise it was Fiat and Karonath, each brandishing a flaming brazier which quickly brought new light to all but the deepest recesses of the room. As their firelight pushed back the darkness, the web of shadows clinging to the Mages' eyes and ears were forced away, and for the first time in nearly a minute Elysian heard and saw and was able to speak again. In his mind, Elysian felt the sudden rush of Aqshy energy reset the balance of the Winds that the now ill-tempered tendrils of Ulgu had broken. The arcane energies spilled back out into the chamber, ready to be used again... but for one major problem.

With every bat they cut down, a wisp of black smoke was left in its place. At first Elysian had thought these might be forming the growing mass of Shyish energy within the aether, but he realised they were not. The deaths of the bats meant little to the balance of the winds, and the black smoke left in their wake seemed to be nothing more than an afterimage of their presence. So why then, was the Wind of Shyish ascending at such a rapid rate? Already Ghyran and Hysh had been completely expelled from the chamber, and now Azyr and Chamon were barely detectable. Ulgu and Ghur still writhed around the chamber, but the Mage noticed with sudden horror that every time one of the bats took a droplet of their blood the tendrils of Shyish were growing, weaving an all enclosing web around the chamber that the rest of the group were completely unaware of. Whatever the bats were, every drop of blood they stole from the group was making them stronger. Much stronger.

Phalx suddenly crashed to the floor behind them, wrapped in a cloak of screeching bats, as the few hundred bats that had survived the explosion descened on them once again.

And then, with a hiss of mechanical hinges and the ominous crash of a heavy iron door slamming shut, the hatch closed itself above them...

Vryala, -1 firebomb.
All, minus many, many drops of blood! ;)

OOC: The architect of this manor deserves an unpleasant death. :P

IC:

Wrapping her cloak tightly round in blind instinct, V tried to shield herself from both the vicious winged pests and the impending results of her plan. Even through the arcane shadows covering her eyes she could register its fiery impact, terrified shrieks accompanying the blast in a most satisfactory fashion. Not a moment too soon, either; even though her body was well-enclosed quite a few fangs had found their way through the creases, draining a substantial amount of blood. Though, to V's relief, her vision was slowly returning to her. There were a lot of blots, some seemingly more distressed than others, and of course tons of little screechy blots left. Two more blots soon joined them, shiny orbs swinging about them. And finally a rather noisy and ungraceful blot seemed to have crashed through the hatch, accounting for the entire party of blots by V's reckoning. Said hatch now seemed to lock itself, by the sound of it. Weird, V mused, if this is where Tvar rests, I'd reckon she'd want to lock people out, instead of in... but let's not get ahead of ourselves. Shaking off the blurryness one last time, Vryala got back to business: dealing with little screechy blots.

V will try to hit the little screechy blots.

K jumped down the steps. Something crashed to the ground behind her, and she spun to face it. It was Phalx, fallen down seemingly. He writhed biciously and K had to jump out the way of his swords, but had the nous to hack away at the things all over him at the same time. Then the shadows above changed and K looked up. The hatch fell and closed. The noise shocked her, not as a noise but as an insult.

Yet she lost no time.

K will use her brazier to rid Phalx of his attackers, then help him up, hand him a brazier and go see about lifting the trap.

Suddenly the light was gone, all save the leering eyes from the skull upon the mantle piece. Phalx fought on above the hatch, slashing this way and that, as he realised what had happened.

YOU BASTARDS, he roared, as he cut another bat in twain. They had left him up here in the dark, surrounded by the winged shadowy blood suckers. Then suddenly he was falling down the hatch, towards the flickering light below. He heard the hatch close above him, as he fell hard on the rough floor.

Somehow he had kept hold of his sword, and he gave a slight groan as he rolled onto his side breathing heavily. He just wanted to lie down for a moment and rest. Let them fight, let them deal with the bats.

Phalx being drunk, bleeding, and having suffered a serious fall, will just rest for a moment.

Leaping through the air like an acrobat, Sal slammed into the archway wall hard, hoping to avoid the flame grenade he could see Vryala about to hurl. Gritting his teeth, Sal had little time to take cover. He would be crisped along with the bats he thought, his scimitar’s dripping with the thick black and red flying rodent blood. He watched the grenade break against the wall close to the broken mirror. A shadow moved fast to his side, Sal realising is was Vryala herself and he stayed his blades. Even though she had been blinded, she had tracked Sal’s movement’s perfectly from the sound of him hitting the wall and shrouded him with a large wave from her Sea Dragon Cloak. The bulky scale protection kept away the resulting explosion of flame and heat, Sal still feel the tops of his feet pop with the feeling of blister’s readily forming and bursting as the flames licked at his open top sandals. He grunted with the pain and blinked the smoke and ash from his eyes.

Inspecting himself quickly, Sal patted out the few embers that smouldered on the tips of his robes as well as his hair that plumed out from the back of his helmet. His muscular arms and legs were dotted with puncture marks, the bats having done more damage than he had expected. Innumerable bite marks ran up and down his arms and legs, sending a shiver of shame running down Sal’s spine as he had only moments ago sworn not to let a wound go unchecked without lesson, yet now he had so many wounds. He trembled with rage momentarily then remembered the form of Vryala hugged tight against him, her black armour once cold now warmed by the flame that had enveloped both of him. He swallowed the remnants of his rage and turned to Vryala, risking a sentimental moment and grabbed her by the shoulder and steadied himself before thanking her for saving him from a roasting.

Turning his attention to the room behind him, Sal watched the thinned out mass of bats that still assailed the group, yet still numerous, they weren’t as bad as before. It was much darker within the room, even with the aid of torches that Fiat and Karonath appeared to hold. The metal hatch had closed on them, just as planned by a certain someone who was no doubt behind this. The form of Phalx lay at the foot of the ladder, enraged bats swarming over him in a storm of gnashing fangs and swiping claws. Karonath was rushing to his aid so Sal turned his attention to Elysian who stood amongst the raging rodents. His hands still clutched his scimitars tightly, even though they were wet and slippery with the blood of the vampire-like creatures. Dashing towards Elysian, it was now time for Sal to save the mage from the bats. Calling out to the mage as he began slicing into the bats, his scimitars trying to practise the same amount of precision and care like they had before, Sal attempted to clear the air around the sorcerer.

Elysian! Snarled Sal.

Sal will try to recreate the same amount of precision with his swords like he was doing before with trying to get the bats away from Elysian, or at least giving the mage room to escape the bats and give himself more room to work.

Everything was blackness and not in a good way, it was incredibly disorienting having almost no eternal stimuli. Not that Elysian would have used a word like stimuli right then, he would probably have gone with oww. The bats were hard enough to keep off at the best of times and these were not the best of times. He was bleeding heavily now from dozens of bites and scratches, all were small but together he could see them being a problem in the near future.

Struggling back up to his knees Elysian was able to shrug off some of the more persistent blood suckers but he could not get them all even when he managed to regain his feet.

Out of nowhere an intense wave of heat hit the mage and sent him stumbling backwards away from it, for a moment there was a let up in the attackers but the bats were soon back and his frantic attempts to drive them away were not meeting with much success, occasionally he managed to clip a wing but it was a drop in a bucket.

Finally after what seemed like an eternity but was in truth probably no more than a minute or so the thick folds of shadow round his face and head melted, driven away by the lights carried by his companions. Sight came rushing back and he could see the scale of the swarm attacking him; hearing also returned just in time for him to hear the sound of the trapdoor closing with a clang and lock with an all too audible click.

That was a bridge they would have to cross in a little while though, for now he just wanted to survive. Now that he could see again Elysian began directing his staff a little better, sweeping it in wide arks through the densest parts of the swarm and praying that he would not be left fighting alone for too long.

In the back of his mind Elysian realised that there was something else going on here, something magical and strange but distracted as he was by the gnats from hell he was unable to turn his full attention to it.

Try to fight off the bats, no more magic for a little while I fear.

OOC - Sorry that you've had to use the same "swing sword at bats" action for the last few posts but was trying to make the scene get more and more intense and was waiting for those above to jump down. Now you've fallen into the trap and the story can continue! A nice twist coming up just around the corner...

IC -

As the hatch slammed shut above them, and with the amulets light now expired, the whole chamber was plunged into darkness but for the two braziers held by Karonath and Fiat. They stood over Phalx as he rolled around on the floor, Karonath helping rid him of his bat problem with her Draich. Fiat in turn helped Elysian, who had just regained his sight but was still shrouded by a cloud of the bloodthirsty bats. Saldrimek strode back into the first chamber to help him too, regaining his focus and slicing his blades through moving bodies with accuracy and grace. Only Vryala remained in the doorway to the coffin chamber, hacking around with her sword still in a two handed grip as the bats whirled about her like a tornado of black wings. The group had slain hundreds of the flying creatures already, but still they were assailed by more of them than they could count.

Only Elysian could perceive the greater danger. With every bite a bat inflicted on one of them, the swarm as a whole was growing in power. The fact they were thinning its numbers didn't seem to matter, for it was almost as if the bats were individual parts of a powerful greater concience. Killing one or killing a thousand, it didn't matter unless they killed them all. It was at that point he felt the winds suddenly shift again, more strongly this time as though a gale was blowing through the room. All the long, encroaching tendrils of Shyish were suddenly drawn into each other, moving in on one point and casting all the other winds aside. The Mage snapped his focus back onto the mundane world as he felt the powers shift, still swinging his staff at the air around him. Phalx was laying on his back, apparently unable or unwilling to fight now and simply resting on his back. Vryala, Karonath, Saldrimek and Fiat had all stopped slashing at the air...

The bats were retreating, flocking back out of the firelit chamber as quickly as they had attacked. Or so it seemed for a moment. Vryala stumbled back away from the archway, rejoining her other companions under the hatch in the first chamber as the bats poured back into the darkness of the coffin chamber from whence they had game. But all was not as it seemed. The bats were not returning to the fireplace, but all being summoned back to same position in the darkness just beyond the archway. The bats from the coffin chamber reached the spot first, and they seemed to dive into the ground and dissapear into one another, growing into a single figure still surrounded by a whirlwind of incoming bats. From the ground up, the dark robes and then the revealing, black armoured corset took shape in the span of just a couple of seconds. The alabaster skin beneath formed next, revealing a bust, two slender, muscular arms, then a neck. They saw the shape of a weapon next, a black cobra shaped staff, with fangs to match its master. As the last of the bats hurtled into her, the visage of swirling darkness was unveiled, and the Vampiress stood before them, resplendent in her evil power.

With a cold sneer, Tvar wiped the back of her hand across her cold, dead lips. The red smear that was left across her cheek was the blood the bats had been taking from them.

K was just about ready to go run up the hatch when all of the bats seemed to disappear. She spun on the spot. They were all flying back into a point just past an archway in the far wall of the chamber she was in. They were flying into the ground - no, they were flying into each other - like they were forming their shadows into one greater shadow. K watched. She knew what the answer to this riddle would be. She stood like one transfixed, as the event unfolded in front of her.

The bats flew together, crashing into one another in that point just beyond the archway. In the point where they collided, a shadow grew, and out of the shadow a form began to take shape. K wondered just what shape it would take. What shape it could take. It became an armoured form - a a womanly form - a very pale womanly form - and yes, that Missy Tvar.

She knew that the thing that breaks her staff was in the room. That V had it, That, therefore she had to get alongside V immediately, and keep the Missy distracted until the damage could be done.

K will run forward to Vryala and prepare to bother the Vampire and defend V.

Finally managing to get rid of the last wisps of haze covering her eyes, V could see the bats had started to retreat back into the coffin chamber. No, not retreat... coalesce. Oh **** oh **** oh **** was all V could think as she remembered she never got to give back the Serpent's Eye to Sal, and frantically searched her pockets for the gem. To her relief she quickly retrieved it; Karonath had already moved up to defend her, resolved to buy her some time, if only to figure out how to use this blasted jewel!?

The impending doom that was Eaun Tvar had now fully formed in front of them, staff and all. She greeted them with but a cold, fanged sneer. V likewise had little use for words; all she cared about right now was finding out whether the arcane jewel would really break her power. If not, she resolved to die a brave death, and met the Vampire's gaze without flinching. Hi!

Using her sword right-handed as normal, V holds the Eye in her left. Lunging at Tvar, she'll try and grab a hold of that pretty staff as soon as the opening presents itself, while defending herself with the blade.

The room was clearing of bats, Sal finally able to see the corners of the room which now was in tatters. The light from the braziers that members of the group held illuminated the horrible display of power, the bats swarming over each other and transforming into the worst possible thing that they could be stuck in a room with. Sal glanced over his shoulder and saw the hatch was indeed shut. It would surely take too long to try and open it, plus he’d rather not turn his back to this vampires. The bats were beginning to form into the slender figure they had come to dread. Sal took this time to quickly sheath his scimitars, hooking them through his waist belt and letting them fall to his sides. His hands instinctively grasped the top and bottom of the haft of his Slayer. Hoisting it from his shoulder, Sal let the huge axe fall down to the earth before catching it and gripping it tightly with both hands.

Eaun Tvar stood before them, her teeth bared behind a deep red pair of lips which spread and smiled her pointed fangs. Sal watched the blood trickle down her finger and how it was licked elegantly from her long, dagger clawed fingers. It was all their blood, she had consumed their blood. Sal exhaled quietly to himself, calming himself and steadying his nerves. He was good as dead if he lost his mind here. Or perhaps he was already dead, or at least deserved to be. His arms and legs were covered with the numerous teeth marks of Eaun. He felt the squeak of leather as he tensed his muscles and rolled back on the balls of his feet momentarily.

Sal could see Vryala fumbling for the Serpents Eye. She was going to finish it here and now. The moment of surprise was secretly theirs, Tvar thinking she had the upper hand. Karonath was already on the move. Whatever the Serpents Eye did, it was going to give them only a few moments advantage, second’s maybe. He watched Vryala lunge at Tvar, as bold as any move. Sal sprung into action. Keen to end this miserable biatch’s life quickly and assuredly. Raising his axe up high above his head, for a horizontal strike would be too close to Vryala, Sal darted out to the vampires flank and waiting until Vryala had only just engaged to bring his Slayer down hard in a huge, crushing smash.

If they all threw in their effort into a huge series of simultaneous blows against the vampire, maybe, just maybe, they would not loose anymore blood tonight. As Sal charged in, he secretly knew this wasn’t simply going to be the case. His arms bled with the bite marks of Tvar and he channelled any last iota of rage he had in his body into this killing blow.

Waiting until Tvar has only just been preoccupied with Vryala’s attacks before attempting to attack from the side with a large, overhead slice with Sal’s Slayer, from the top of her skull to her soles of her feet.

As the bats retreated Elysian knew that this positive turn of events was going to be anything but. Very quickly he was proved right as the vampire herself formed out of the flapping swarm. Before any witty banter could be exchanged in the traditional manner Vryala took matters into her own hands and attacked, swiftly backed by the Khainites.

Elysian had no illusions about his ability to take a vampire on at close quarters and besides the close combat oriented members of the group were already taking up most of the available space. With his miscast only moments passed and knowing that the vampire was as far above him in magical ability as she was physically Elysian instead opted to draw his handbow. Moving around he tried to get into a position where he could take the odd shot, more importantly however should any of the party fall and leave a gap he might be able to land enough hits to be a serious nuisance.

Elysian will draw his handbow and take such shots as present themselves but if there is a chance of hitting the good guys he won’t take it. If a genuine opportunity arises (e.g. Sal gets kicked half way across the room leaving the space he was in open) then Elysian will open up with a full clip.
