On the ramparts on the outer of the two gates, Asilah considered her next actions. Stood directly over the breached gate, she was between the two towers that straddled either side of the entry point. Having left Nathra to continue upstairs, she had exited onto this walkway in case the fleeing Asur Captain had come this way. She had found no-one alive. Her curiosity tempted by what could lie within the second tower, she began to make her way to the door opposite. Something flickered in the corner of her eye, and turning her attention to the left, she was alarmed to see what appeared to be a large flock great eagles heading straight for them. “Nathra!” she cried, turning on her heel and dashing back the way she had come.

Nathra was by now a floor above, with an ear pressed to a doorway. She toyed with a shuriken between her slender fingers, her breathing steady and quiet as she analysed the possible outcomes of opening that door. By now she could hear voices above, yet there was the sound of movement in the room behind the doorway. Steeling her will, the shade lifted the latch and rolled through the door in a swift gambol. Two High Elves turned in surprise; both semi-clad in armour over their white and blue tunics. One drew a short sword from a hip belt whilst the other sidestepped towards a tall cupboard, presumably to find a weapon. The sword-wielding elf stood in a guard position, his blade aimed at the shade crouched before him.

With a flick of her wrist, Nathra let her shuriken fly. The projectile stuck in the swordsman’s throat, right in the adam’s apple. The elf choked, blood bubbling from his mouth and the wound in his neck. Nathra then flipped across the room to intercept the second Asur, tripping him with a sweep to his shins. As he crashed to the floor, she leaped onto his shoulders, and grabbing his head in both hands, gave it a twist, breaking his neck with a crack. Rising to her feet, she stepped over to the mortally wounded swordsman and purred, “You should have stabbed me when you had the chance.”

Down below, Cade did not know how close he had come to being murdered by his former sergeant. The ruse foiled by his offer of a guard unit, Saulk instead had found himself too far from the rising star of the host, defending the rear right flank of the hydra. The forces had pulled together to guard the monster as it finally reached the sealed marble gate. Movement was difficult now, the ground was slippery with blood and hydra-bile, and littered with corpses of elf and horse. Each movement was hindered by the need to step over broken limbs, and many found that standing on the bodies of the fallen was easier than trying to avoid them. Cade’s group was now a third of the number it had originally been. With the High Elf forces suffering far greater losses, this number of dead was a small price to pay for a pending victory. He clutched the standard as the melee swirled around him.

Over the chaos of the battle, he had noticed the approaching eagles above and had ordered a mercenary to head to the General with a warning message. The Druchii didn’t argue, and dodged spears and swords from friend and foe as he hurried to the Command Group. Cade returned his attention to the hydra, as the beast reared its heads and spewed plumes of corrosive venom at the Inner Gates. The thought of pillaging Ellyrion put a grim smile on his lips. The land of the horses would soon be theirs.

Cade hadn’t been the only one to think of warning the General. Up above, Kirael considered the safest and fastest way to get to where he needed to be. The assassin decided that disguise was in order. Taking a cloak and an Asur sword, the assassin abseiled down the outside of the tower wall, landing among a heap of corpses. To a casual observer he would pass for a High Elf, but on closer inspection, the garb of a Druchii and hair colour would make him stand out like a sore thumb. He knew he would also have to be careful not to find himself under attack by his own kin. Weaving through High Elf archers, he was careful not to make eye contact. If any “allies” turned towards him, he would look away, swinging his sword towards the Druchii lines. Slowly he made his way forward, but to his dismay he saw that the Asur were under a pressing attack by the Witch Elves and Zealots of the Temple. So crazed were some of the anointed of Khaine, that they slew their own kind that came too close. He observed a wounded Druchii in an altercation with a Highborn, who then picked up an Asur spear and hurled it into the ranks. An archer next to him stepped forwards as he aimed his primed bow at the enemy in front. As he pulled the bowstring, the spear hit him square in the back. The elf cried out as the head of the spear shattered his ribcage and ruptured his innards. Blood splashed over Kirael as the elf fell to his knees. It was a close call, if the archer hadn’t stepped in front of him, that would be him speared through like a pig. Time to play dead and wait for the slaughter to pass.

Among the maddened Khainite forces, Venarl had just made a new enemy. Having slashed a Druchii Captain, his life was now forfeit. Yet the Temple witches and warriors fought as if this battle was their last anyway. Crashing into the Asur archers, blades slashed and crunched through flesh and bone, and the smell of spilled blood filled the air. The pain of his recent injury slowed him, and made it difficult to parry with his halberd. A Maibd smiled salaciously at him and passed him a piece of courva root to chew on. Biting down on the bitter herb, he soon found himself invigorated, and the arrow wound felt little more than a dull throbbing in his chest. Hate and rage flowed through him, and he hissed with fury, savouring the feeling like a fine wine.

Zacharius – If you don’t post by next weekend I’m going to have to write Asilah out of the story. Although if you’re struggling to find to post and are still interested in participating in this group, let me know in the OOC thread and I can tag her along.

Nathra – 2 High Elves in the room. The unarmed one is dead, the one with the sword is dying. In the words of Mortal Kombat… “FINISH HIM”! Not a lot in the room, but you may inspect the tall cupboard.

-1 shuriken

JC – The mercenary is heading over to the General to report the eagles. The hydra is now trying to get the gate down. Saulk is occupied for now in defending the hydra.

Syjahel – Kirael is on the battlefield, but it’s a mess. He’s found himself slap bang in the middle of the killing ground of the Temple of Khaine. He has just narrowly missed being killed by Venarl. They are pushing the Asur back towards the broken gate behind you all. Seeing as Kirael’s a clever sort of fellow, I’ve allowed for him to lie low until the mob has passed over.

+1 Ithilmar short sword, +1 High Elf Cloak

Raven – Venarl is having fun slaughtering in the name of Khaine. He’s just nearly killed Kirael. Venarl’s arrow wound has inhibited his movement. Parry is reduced so I’m going to take this into account for a while. He’s been patched up with some Khainite First Aid – Courva Root. Imagine super caffeine, that makes one feel invincible, and invulnerable to pain. When it wears off he’s going to know about it though!

Nathra bore these two guards no particular enmity, but they were in her way and it was highly unlikely that they would just let her pass. It was most definitely a case of kill or be killed. As much as she enjoyed killing, she preferred to kill for a reason, a good hunt was just as thrilling as the reward to be reaped at the hunts successful end. For her, it usually meant a decent meal and a good nights sleep.

She heard her name being called from outside, the other female had clearly ran into something that troubled her greatly. Nathra had a little time.

Her startling emerald eyes looked down on the dying Asur, a hint of pity etched onto her otherwise perfect face. She straddled him as she sat on his belly. “You should have stabbed me when you had the chance.” She said to him, in a sad, pleasant voice. The guard struggled feebly but the shade knew he had no energy to fight her. "And now I shall grant you a gift." Leaning close she kissed him full on the lips, then snapped his neck. The gift of mercy.

Despite the slight expression of shock on his face and the confusion in his eyes, the Asur looked almost peaceful. With two fingers, Nathra softly closed his eyelids. All things considered there were far more ignoble fates than the one he suffered.

Sighing, the shade stood up quickly and frisked both corpses for any valuables, money or anything else she could put to use. The first guard had ran for the tall cupboard, considering he was unarmed she could guess at what was contained within. She was happy with her current armament, nevertheless, she was also curious, so she stepped over to the cupboard and yanked the doors open.

Nathra will divest both Asur corpses of anything she can use - money, weapons, valuables etc.
She will then inspect the contents of the cupboard.
Lastly, she will make her way upstairs to the next level of the tower. And again, she will pause at the door to listen and form a plan of action.

As the Courva herb travelled through his veins dispelling the pain from his wound, a strange side effect began to spark as a moment of madness seemed to take hold. A swarming and overwhelming desire washed over him. His eyes flared as he could feel the blood rushing through his entire body. Venarl grabbed the nearest witch elf by her wrist, dragging her close to his body before kissing her passionately. The maiden struck a heavy blow that landed across his cheek, he knew he would have received such a response as he prepared himself for the inevitable second blow. He dogged the sword aimed at his throat as he began laughing quietly to himself as the other maidens restrained his attacker, reminding her of the more pressing concerns. Pleased with his small victory he made a hasty retreat.

He retreated into the mass of kainite’s and surveyed his environment. The battle had sapped much of his strength, and with his recent dramatic introduction to the Druchii command he thought it best to hide in the shadows for a short amount of time. Fighting battles and wars were no longer his main concern, insuring that he lived was far more important.

As he moved through the mass of bodies both living and dead, the stench of death ripped through his nostrils leaving a sharp acrid taste in his mouth. He fought to keep himself from gaging but continued to move forward. His eyes drifted upon intricately carved statues a little taller than the average elf, holding numerous weapons. Some had been broken and damaged in various places; some appeared to have been damaged by time, others from the more recent battles that had taken place.

In his somewhat confused state Vernal viewed one of the ornate swords with an almost innocent wonder. Through dazed eyes it appeared to be a real weapon of pristine metal and beauty. As he walked to the statute, he grabbed the hilt of the sword trying to pull it free. A dull pain shot through his arm significant enough to notice but thanks to the witches herb, it didn’t hinder his movements. As he tried to pull the sword free the statues arms moved forward followed by a heavy almost mechanical clank. Bright jade eyes starred down at him from the statues face as his listened intently, for a moment he questioned if he was hallucinating but he swore he heard something opening.

It was then that he felt a numb shock in his head as reality once again became a stark focus. That was proof he needed a simple mind trick. He held a hand to his head as he breathed deeply trying to compose himself.
"I am not losing my mind...I cant be.." It was then it became clear he was actually removing a sword from a lifeless body with its vacant expression staring up at him. In anger he plunged the sword back into the body.
"Lesson learned stay well clear from witches!"

Gaelus saw that the mercenary was away and should easily get word to the General of the impending threat. Returning his attention to the battle, the hydra had closed the last few yards to the gate. Already, it begain an unrelenting assault on the giant slabs of ensorcelled stone. Bile and corrosive acid bubbled and cracked the stonework in the most unnatural fashion.

Good, we might yet get out of this killing field yet, he thought to himself.

Above, archers and spearmen of the Asur continued to rain death on his comrades and harass the hydra. They fought with the annoying haughty discipline the pointy-eared goody two shoes oft did, likely redoubled with the knowledge that the gate was the last bastion before ellyrion and the center of Ulthuan proper.

It seems our misguided cousins would like to die dearly for their race. Let's help them along then! To the walls, bring down those archers!, he cried to those mercenaries loitering at the rear. He pulled out his handbow and fired at the Asur on the wall. Looking about he searched for a way up.

Archers do make the most lovely prey, he thought to himself maliciously.

Gaelus will continue to rally those near the hydra. He will also try to organize an assault on the wall (im assuming there are stairs on the inner side of the gate?), providing cover with his handbow.

Ducking quickly into cover of the body of a fallen kinsman, Kirael lay low as the blood-maddened Host of Khaine thundered over him. He knew well the light of murder-lust in their eyes. That they were in the grip of a sacred frenzy, however, did not mean that he had to throw himself onto their blades. He had work to do, other ways to serve.

Once the immediate danger lessened, he took the first opportunity he could to divest himself of the gaudy Asur garments. Once freed of the impromptu disguise, he was on his feet and weaving his way through the battlefield towards the commanding staff of the Druchii. Clear of the front line, he began to try to shout and alert the troops to the danger in the skies. The noise of battle did not help his cause, but Kirael kept on running, trying to reach the war-leaders.

Try to alert command to the threat of the eagles. Try not to get killed in the process!

Vernal came close to honouring Khaine with his own soul, as some hallucinogenic drug addled his senses. The courva must have been laced with dream wine or black lotus. Any other time it might have been enjoyable, but in the field of battle, it had nearly cost him his life. He stared at his palm, which now bore a line of red where he had taken a sword up by its blade. Thrusting the weapon back into the corpse from whence it came, the Khainite moved on through the dull taint of his injuries, using sheer will to drive himself onwards. The Asur were thinning out, of the original defence force, now less than two dozen remained. Ahead lay the crumbled stones of the ruined gateway which framed a vista of the gloom of the Shadowlands, the Outer Sea and sunken Tiranoc a ribbon of silver behind. He was nearly sure he saw a shadow moving through the stones. Shaking his head he ignored it, must be the dream wine. As a trio of witch elves raced past him and hacked down a spearman, he snapped back to his senses, swinging his glaive in an arc with a murderous howl.

After checking the bodies for salvageable items, Nathra searched the cupboard, but found nothing of interest. It appeared to be a store cupboard for weaponry, spears perhaps, but the notches were all empty. Instead she continued her ascent. Up in the tower, Nathra appeared to be alone. What had become of her companion? Was she the only one left of those that had scaled the walls? No matter. She was now where she wanted to be, right at the top of the tower. Her heart pounded in her chest in anticipation as the adrenaline rose. All that stood between her and her quarry was the door. With a shunt she burst through and rolled across the floor to poise herself ready to strike. The astonished Captain whom she had been pursuing gasped, dropping his wine glass which shattered on the stone floor.

“I see our guest has finally joined us.” Announced the Asur Commander, turning from the window to greet the Druchii maiden. “What news from the Land of Chill?”

Cade fought like a cornered manticore, not once loosing his standard, which he leaned against a shoulder when he wasn’t using it to sweep at Asur foes. With a well-aimed shot, he felled an archer from the walls, who plummeted down to the marble flagstones with a bolt through his neck. Saulk was busy with the mercenaries, or so he thought. Whilst the young noble rallied troops to gain a position on the ramparts of the inner gate, the Sergeant swirled in the melee so that he moved back towards the Commander. He had seen Cade send the messenger, and would deny him any more glory. Taking up a bow and arrow from a slain High Elf, he took aim and let fly a blue fletched arrow. The projectile burst through Cade’s messenger’s back, stopping the young mercenary in his tracks. Saulk laughed as the Druchii’s legs kept carrying him forwards before his heart stopped. Just another casualty of war… Saulk took up the quiver from the Asur at his feet and hung it from his hip. Now where was that upstart?

Kirael reached General Thaekan just as Cade’s messenger did. Yet Kirael arrived still breathing, and not as a twitching body with an arrow in his back, at the feet of the warriors. Racing past the sorceresses, dodging blasts of dark energy, his urgent approach roused the curiosity of the Command Group. The General’s Guard grouped around them protectively. “State your business.” ordered one in a gruff voice beneath a full helm. At this precise moment, the piercing shriek of a great eagle echoed in the pass as the flock of war-birds prepared to strike.

Syjahel – Kirael made it! Time to deliver that message. Note – that map you have with the tunnel by the granary… the granary is to your left, so the tunnel would be placed in the north east face of the pass wall.

Venarl – Is it the drugs, or is something out there? You’ll find out soon enough… ;-) Keep fighting for Khaine’s glory, I’ve got something up my sleeve.

MG – I’ve rolled this forward a bit – I have to, to make this all fall into place at the same time for everyone. Nathra has found her way into the top of the tower, and is in the same room as the Commander and Captain. Besides them, the tower is now emptied.

+ 1 swordbelt, 3 gold coins

JC – Saulk has a bow and quiver of arrows and has broken away from your group in the fight. He has murder in mind. Watch your back.

All – The eagles are about to swoop. They’re aiming for the main battle area between the inner and outer gate. There are 24 of them, and are approaching from the north east.

The pale young shade quickly stripped the two soldiers of anything she could use. She added a few coins to her paltry collection and found a serviceable sword-belt from around the hips of the Asur she had blessed with the gift of mercy. Considering the rate at which she was acquiring weapons, the belt would certainly be appreciated.

Again she wondered what had become of the khainite who had followed her up the cliff, her name had been called and Nathra was curious why as the other female sounded distressed. But the shade had more pressing concerns to deal with, devotees of the Bloody Handed God were known for their martial prowess and Nathra was sure she wouldn't have to go to the khainites rescue, as amusing as that would be. A khainite who cannot fend for herself is not worthy of the name. No khainite is really worthy of anything, except oblivion.

Nathra silently padded up to the next room and took a few moments to ascertain that no one was within. She entered a nondescript room which appeared to empty of anything even remotely interesting. Hopping along to the next door, the shade once again stealthed her way up another flight of stairs. She heard nothing but silence from within, but her senses told her the room was not empty. Using a similar approached to the first room Nathra shoved her way in and quickly found somewhere reasonably safe within.

The captain whom she was following dropped his wine glass in surprise - he was clearly an idiot, Nathra had previously surmised as much. Another elf turned to face her, and asked her a rather odd question, as if she were some kind of messenger. What news from the Land of Chill? Not letting her guard down even for an instant, Nathra raised an eyebrow.

"Pour me some wine, and I'll tell you." Emerald eyes flicked between the two Asur, the shade quickly reassessed her priorities. She had been chasing the captain with the intent of killing him, that had not changed but he was no longer the most important target. Plus, he was a fool, and the noble-born shade hated fighting fools. The commander was, perhaps, her equal in a fight, and likely had the training to actually be something of a challenge. "The usual; terrible weather, pointless political shenanigans, miserable people. Any worthwhile news here as of late?"

Nathra will try to learn something of the commanders plans but isn't hopeful for the outcome. If it comes to fighting - which she will instigate at a 'surprise' moment - she will will quickly deal with the captain with a shuriken to his throat or face then draw her sword to face the commander. As always, she'll use her surroundings to her advantage, tossing chairs, toppling tables etc. while she jumps around the room like a kangaroo on coffee. Afterwards she will loot both corpses and anything else of interest in the room.

The Captain laid his hand on the hilt of his sword, and begun to unsheathe the weapon, whilst gazing at the Commander as he tried to gauge his intent. His attention was upon the wild-looking female that had so dramatically entered. He recognised her immediately as being one of the group that had scaled the walls, and was aware of her lethal abilities. "Careful my lord, she's as fast as a viper, and just as venomous."

"Pour her a glass." The Commander ordered, to the disbelief of his Captain. "Why don't you take a seat, after all, you are a guest in our land." he gestured, as the Captain poured a rich red wine from a gold decanter into a crystal goblet, his jaw locked and eyes wild with barely controlled anger. He passed it to the shade, and took a step back, making sure he was between her and the door.

"Despite this spate of dreadful weather, I anticipate a change on the winds." the Commander replied, referring to the sorcerous storm. "It would be nice for you to see it."

Stamina was not the lithe assassin's strongest point, but speed was. He wove among the roaring, heaving melee like a weasel through a hedgerow, leaping over bodies, ducking under blades, once throwing himself to the ground to avoid the sorcerous blast of dark energy. As the lethal force streamed over him, he rolled and was back on his feet, racing towards the command group even as the giant eagles streaked across the sky. He could not risk a single backward glance to tell how near they were.

The General’s Guard grouped around them protectively. “State your business.”

Kirael dropped to one knee and bowed his head to General Thaekan for the briefest possible time, pointing to the sky.

"Dread lord, we are about to be attacked from the skies. I counted at least two score. From the north-east." Getting to his feet, the Khainite slipped the documents from his tunic in the most obvious 'I am getting out papers, not about to stab you' way he could manage.

"I have been inside the gatehouse and I discovered these documents." Passing the blood-flecked papers over to the group's commander, it was clear that he hadn't just robbed some filing cabinet but shed blood in Khaine's holy name. Kirael kept things short and simple due to lack of time, not an underappreciation of the commander's abilities. He could hear the rising screech of the giant birds growing ever closer.

"There is a tunnel under the gatehouse by the north-east face of the wall." He handed the open map to the General and stood tensely, waiting. "If my lord commands I will lead a force there. It will take us right inside the gate to a granary, if I read it right." Ge stepped back, ready to serve Khaine and the Witch King as he had been taught from birth, his assassin's instincts urging him to take action, not wait about on death.

Kirael will take a force to the tunnel if ordered, otherwise he will head that way himself. For Khaine! :D

The captain was clearly flummoxed by the actions of his commander, somewhat hesitantly, he poured Nathra a glass of crimson wine. The shade cautiously took it from him as he handed it to her, then flashed the captain a playful smile.

"Venomous? That was an unkind thing to say. If you're commander wasn't such a courteous host, I would kill you were you stand!" She took a sip of wine and took a brief moment to savour the taste. "Hmm. That is a decent vintage." Nathra murmured before eyeing the commander appreciatively.

"I will stand, thank you. If I sit your underling here looks set to stab me in the back." It was uncertain whether any Asur knew of the different Houses of the Druchii, but one need only to look upon Nathra's well-honed features to estimate that she was of noble birth, that royal blood ran in her veins. The pommel of her sword clearly showed the rune of her House, and Nathra made no attempt to conceal it from these two Asur.

"A change, you say, any change in particular?"

Kirael hurriedly reported his warning. All heads turned up halfway through, as a shriek pierced the air.

"Rally to me!" Yelled the General, looking to the skies with fury. Three blasts from the musicians war horn echoed through the pass as the great birds began to swoop and plummet down, lethal claws ready to grab and snatch. The sorceresses began to focus their powers on firing blasts of dhar to the skies.

Slowly, the Command Group was making its way to the Granary. With no time to read the sealed documents, the tide of the battle appeared to be turning dramatically.

"I dare say it is a good deal finer than what you have to put up with. Caledor Blush, an excellent vintage." Remarked the Commander, about the wine as Nathra made the decision to stand. The Commander moved away from the pedestal, upon which the glowing orb swirled and gestured to the window. "Why don't you come see for yourself?"

Nathra edged forwards, watching the Captain and Noble as she made her way to the window. Peering out, she could see why he was being so smug. It looked like the whole of Nagarythe was pouring up from the Shadowlands to the ruined gates. Hooded shadow warriors, rushing forwards with deadly intent.

As the effects of the lethal drugs Venarl had taken begun to wear off, he thought it best to stalk this dread place for any signs of prey. Battle had been a constant in his life; perhaps it would provide him some therapy. As he walked through the battle field of death (a most suitable shrine to lord of murder) a foul noise sent a cold rush of anxiety through him. The shrill cry of eagles echoed through the skies. One after another their cries vibrated through the air. Venarl griped his halberd firmly as if anticipating an attack at any moment. The sound of horns rang out not far from where Venarl stood. The elf welcomed the opportunity to rally with the rest of the force, perhaps that could provide him with some comfort. The Druchii forces that surrounded Venarl began to edge forward responding to the order but fear made them look anxiously to the skies.

Despite the eagles great size Venarl did not hear the beast swoop behind them as it sank its claws around three helpless victims’ mere feet from where he stood. In sense of panic the warriors around the great bird hacked towards their newest foe, yet the beasts easily evaded the blows. Venarl picked up a sword from the ground and flung it towards the eagle, only to see it fly harmless through the air. In mere seconds the eagle had ascended, dragging his screaming brothers and sisters to their fate. He hoped for their sake it would be brief. Daring not to look to the skies for a moment longer Venarl looked towards his fellow Druchii urging them to make haste towards the General.

Gaelus rallied the troops around him. All around, the mercenaries were using the hydras bulk and distraction on the gate to begin an assault anew on the ramparts proper. He even noticed the brave knight commander retrieve a bow and quiver, following his lead. Given his status over him, he decided let him lead the charge. To the Knight Commander! See, he goes with arrow and bow to take the ramparts with you! For the old Nagarythe! The day will be ours!

Knowing that the standard was best where the thick of it was, he knew he had placed himself well in the battle. He also knew, he would have to anticipate the next move of the druchii. An eagles cry grasped his attention. Moments later, the command group's musician let loose a blast. The Lord General was being attacked directly.

As much as Gaelus appreciated the chains of service (literally) he was bound to the lord general, he wasn't exactly particularly fond of the elf. That being said, however, he knew that if the command group fell, so too would the mages and much of the leadership. Gaelus knew such a thing would be disastrous for the army and he didnt particularly fancy his chances being stranded in the Ulthan shadowlands, leagues from home. He turned quickly to some of the hardier mercenaries nearby that had means to attack the eagles (with bow or otherwise).

You, with me. We go to the command group, they will need safe passage to cover from the skies.

Gaelus will encourage Saulks "assault on the wall" and try to lead a group to go protect the general and co.

Any pig-swill would taste fine right now - it has been... Wow! That Long? Nathra could not remember the last time she had drank wine, not that it was in anyway important - there were far more pressing concerns to be concerned with. The pale young shade did not let her awareness at the present situation drop, for she was in a room with two 'hated enemy' of high-rank, not that she bore them any particular grievance but she could not guarantee that they shared the same empathetic view. It was clear that the Commander had allowed her to come this far, the question was; why?

The noble-born shade peered through the window at the sight which the Asur commander was so clearly smug about. This invasion has seemed a little too easy, until now! shiz! Nathra had expected the Asur to have something planned, for they would not sit idly by while the Druchii raped their lands, but this? Thaeken should have expected something like this! She should go warn them, though it was already too late for that. A veritable horde of Nagarythe warriors were approaching the gates...

You die! She screamed internally, so as not to give either of them warning. The goblet she held left-handed was flung at the back of the Asur commanders head even while she swiftly pulled her longsword - Severance - loose and in a quick, almost single action she thrust it behind her to stab at the captains stomach. She gave the sword a savage twist, then jumped backwards. Nathra had to ensure the captain was no longer a threat before she could deal with the commander - getting stuck between them was asking for trouble.

Nathra hopes to surprise the captain with a quick thrust to his stomach to take him out quickly. Even with her skills she knows she might not survive a fight against both of them, so plans to take out the captain as quickly and efficiently as possible. The stomach thrust may not be fatal but Nathra will finish him off by slashing his neck open, or something equally grisly. Only once she is sure the captain is dead will she make ready to face the commander.

Nathra will also want to loot the room when it is cleared - if by some means the commander escapes...

Although the giant birds had not exactly hid their approach, Kirael was relieved that he had managed to warn the command, if only just. Knowledge of a secret way might help to balance the odds in their favour, and the General was not slow to act on that. Keeping his wits about him, Kirael fell in at the rear of the party. He did not know if the Asur employed their own assassins, precisely, although he had heard that they did follow Khaine in some debased fashion. But he was aware that any strike against the command party could cost the Naggarothi the battle if their lines fell into disarray. Sticking close to the command group he kept watch for any hostile actions against them - from either side. It wouldn't be unknown for the Druchii to settle old scores at a time like this. Best to be prepared.

Keeping close to the small group, Kirael did not neglect any chance to spill the blood of the enemy, but he, like the rest, was focussed on getting past the walls where the damage done could be so much greater.

Keep with the command group and act as a deterrent for anyone trying to cost the Druchii army their leadership. (Mostly Asur ...) This handily keeps him moving in the right direction towards the passage under the walls. Not forgotten about the giant eagles but Kirael reasons there is nothing he can do from this range with his weapons - hopefully the Sorceresses can handle things.

In rapid succession, the eagles swooped down upon their prey. Warriors screamed as they were lifted in the grip of talons before being ripped in two in the air, or dropped hundreds of feet to their death. Half a dozen of the birds made ready to swoop down upon the Command Group. Their intentions noted, the three sorceresses redoubled their efforts, their dark magic joined by crossbow bolts. One of the birds was consumed by purple fire, its feathers set ablaze. Another was hit by a stream of chill, freezing it mid-air. The creature plummeted from the sky before landing on the bloodied marble flagstones and shattering into a thousand shards. As they pulled up to launch another strike, one of the birds opened its claws and gripped onto one of the mistresses of dhar. With a scream, the sorceress was lifted into the air, her sisters trying in vain to save her. Another blast of ice halted the bird, yet its grip was firm and as it fell to the ground, the force of the fall sealed the doom of the Druchii sorceress. Enraged, the surviving two women raised their staffs in vengeance, lashing out at anything they could.

Venarl was making his way back towards the General, weaving through the falling bodies or parts thereof. Careful not to be snatched up by an eagle himself, he rushed through and onwards, slashing at any Asur that came in his way. With a thud that shook the ground, an eagle came crashing down to his left. The birds plumage shimmered with ice, and beneath the giant body he could make out the pale form of a female. Her eyes wide and staring, something was gripped between her hands. There was no mistake that she was one of the sorceresses. Yet there was something strange about her staff that Venarl couldn't resist investigating.

Cade heard the rallying call and was not one to deny the General's wishes. With an assertive call, he rallied some warriors to him, leaving the others to join Saulk in a perceived bid to take the Inner Gate. Cade and his men fought through a light resistance, the Asur almost relaxing now that their reinforcements had arrived. All along the way they were harried by eagles, the mercenary to Cade's right was swept up from his feet and dumped from a great height somewhere behind them. A bird made an attempt to grab the standard in its talons, Cade wrenching it with a twist from its grip, ripping the flayed skin of the Asur mage into tatters.

Saulk bitterly watched them move on, and took his chances firing an arrow from the Asur bow. With very little experience in using such a weapon, he snarled as the arrow missed Cade by a foot, instead burying itself in the collarbone of an Asur swordsman. He notched another arrow and pulled, then looked up in fright as an eagle came down for him. With a curse, he released the arrow, which found its mark in the great eagle's right eye. The creature shrieked and twisted as it swooped down, its claws snapping closed and open to tear apart anything that found its way into its grip. Saulk rolled out of the way and drew his sword. Sod the gate, he needed to survive.

The hydra's efforts in breaking the Inner Gate were put on hold as it was harassed by eight eagles. All swooping in fast succession, the monster lost heads and suffered long wounds across its flanks. Slowly regenerating from each decapitation, the monster vomited venomous bile at its attackers, clumsily spewing on anything in the way, including Druchii forces. Any efforts of the Beast Masters were lost in the chaos of the aerial onslaught, and the hydra soon began to rampage.

Kirael was already near the Command Group, having given his report. With widening eyes the grim reality of what was happening was dawning upon him. As he watched the wounded hydra charge back towards the Outer Gate, belching venom over the place, his eye was drawn to what was approaching. Shadow warriors were pouring through the rubble, sealing off any retreat for the Druchii. Already there seemed to be a hundred, how many more? The General noticed his look of alarm and grimly assessed the situation.

As Nathra learned of the trap that had been set for the army, all niceties were forgotten. With a swift motion she thrust her blade through the Captain's stomach, before turning and slashing his throat from ear to ear.

"I expected such dramatics from your ilk." mused the Commander calmly."No matter, even if this is where I die too, my end shall have served a purpose. I will not die in vain. You however, shall."

He drew a sword from a belt on his hip, and holding it in a low guard with both hands stepped forwards to Nathra bringing the weapon up to slash her diagonally upwards. Suddenly, Asilah burst through the door, panting slightly from the exertion of running up the steps to the top of the tower. With surprise she looked at the bleeding corpse of the Captain, and then to Nathra and the Commander, mid-attack. "Did I miss the fun?"

Raven – Here's the opportunity I was saving for Venarl. The sorceress has been using an Asur staff against the High Elves. It belonged to a mage who led the previous battle. It is ornate white wood with gold decoration. In the head is a mystical gem which swirls with blue light. If you want to develop Venarl into a mage, this might be an opportunity for him!

JC – Good stuff, I'm edging Cade towards the General. If you don't get a chance to post during these next couple of weeks I'll roll him along in the story.

Syjahel – Kirael's just noticed the Shadow Warriors. Stay close to the Command Group if you can.

MG – Some more fighty action! Don't worry – I won't forget the loot. I'll roll for it for you and give you a suitable opportunity once you've cleaned up in the tower.

The situation was turning out rather well, now that the Captain was dead, Nathra had the commander just where she wanted him. Then the unexpected happened, the khainite woman turned up! Her timing could not have been worse, the last thing Nathra needed was a distraction, and the shade did not fight well in enclosed spaces when she had assistance. Nevertheless, the lithe shades concentration never faltered for an instant. She quickly slashed her weapon to parry the Asurs attack, then quickly jumped back out of his reach.

"Go! Tell Thaeken the army is about to be ambushed; there are thousands of Asur coming this way! Go, now!" She did kept her tone stern but not overzealous, hoping the import of her words would not be lost on the khainite; perhaps the other female could be useful for something, after all.

The Lady of House Severain's startling emerald eyes sparkled like a predators as she readied her weapon to face the commander once more. She grinned, wickedly. "It is not my time to die." Transferring Severance to her left hand, the tricky shade grabbed a chair and flung it under-arm at the commander, hoping to unbalance him. She stepped closer, her longsword flicked out a sidelong sweep which would miss her opponents legs by inches, mid-swing she stepped into the thrust of her sword, then gripped it in both hands as she thrust the blade into the commanders groin.

But the shade was not stopping there, she moved with the grace of a a natural hunter. Even before the thrust was finalised - though the thrust still ran it's course - she was back-flipping her way over the table, using the level surface to roll herself into the chair at the other side, ready to defend or attack as necessary.

Nathra has commanded Asilah to take the news of the approaching Asur to general Thaeken - Nathra will do this herself (for she doesn't really trust khainites, what sane Druchii would?) once everything in the room is settled.
She throws a chair to distract the commander while she follows up with a thrust to his private region then she somersaults over the table and takes a seat in the chair the commander would be sitting in if he was sitting when Nathra entered the room. She''l probably wink at him if he is still capable of fighting!

OOC: Thanks, Nightcall :)

A shattering thud stopped Venarl in his tracks as he expected great eagle’s claws to reaching out him. To his surprise and relief his eyes met the fallen beast. A cold mist emanated from its corpse as yet another body adorned the battlefield. Venarl watched the skies with wonder as bolt of arcane energy lashed out like whips into the air upon the command of the sorceresses, their cries echoed with pain and agony caused by their lost sister. After quickly dispatching a deranged Asur warrior with a quick slash to the throat the young elf continued to scan the beast as his eyes were drawn to something of far more interest.

His eyes met the cold dead stare of a Druchii sorceress who had fell victim to those iron like claws. He instantly felt a sense of longing, as if he was somehow meant to meet this elf, something that would now never come to pass. As his eyes drifted down her body he saw a glint of light shine brightly. It was clear this was not crafted by Druchii hands but Asur. The thought repulsed him at first. To think the sorceress would have used an Asur relic! Then the delicious irony struck him, how Asur mages had created a weapon that would spell the fate of their own.

As Venarl stepped closer he felt almost compelled to take the staff yet as he looked towards those lifeless eyes it felt wrong somehow. Despite his doubts he stretched out his arm and grasped the staff admiring the blue light that hovered around the blue gem. It was then that his arm started to shake as he felt power vibrate through him. It took all his concentration to keep a hold of the staff as if the sorceress’s soul still lingered on refusing to give up her prize. Within that moment all the events of the battle up to this very moment flashed before his eyes. The feeling of fear, of doubt of weakness. He longed for something more for a power he knew lay within him that previously lay out of his reach. As his eyes hungrily stared deep into the crystals heart he whispered

“This is what I have longed for my whole life! This is truly my destiny”

The staff still vibrated in his hand somewhat but the feeling was now more controllable, as he straightened up his body he looked around him towards the two remaining sorceresses with an almost deranged smile creeping across his face. Slowly he moved forward intent on seeking their counsel.

Venarl will continue to attempt to hack his way attempting to reach the sorceresses to seek aid on how to harness the power of his newly acquired relic.

There was no point telling Nathra about the eagles. Catching a glance out through the window opposite the door in which she had came, Asilah could see the great birds rushing past and over into the pass behind. Nathra seemed too busy for any sort of conversation, let alone a polite one. Nathra barked her orders, and Asilah narrowed her eyes. "I will do no such thing." As Nathra threw herself into combat, Asilah lunged forwards and joined the fight.

Nathra tossed a chair at the High Elf who turned to one side as it clattered across the room. His attack faltered, instead turning into a parry as the shade feinted at his legs. As Nathra lunged at his groin, the Commander dropped his sword again to parry the stroke aside with the forté of his blade. Asilah slashed with her slender sword at his torso, but the Commander's ithilmar armour prevented any harm being done. Asilah returned her guard and lunged low with her dagger as the Commander kicked the thrown chair at her. Nathra's strike had come short, but she was ready for the next course of action. Having back-flipped across the room, she scowled as Asilah bumbled about with the furniture. No matter. Her recovery had taken her to the Commander's chair, and making the most of an opportunity to enrage a pompous fop like this, she took a seat and threw him a wink.

Down below, Venarl, devotee of Khaine, had taken up an artefact of great power. Having somehow overcome resistance from the Asur staff, and the spirit of the slain sorceress, it was now bound to him. He had felt power coursing through his veins before, but this... this was something entirely new. His hands felt like they were shaking as he carried the staff towards the remaining two sorceresses. All the battle seemed to pass out of his mind, the witch elves, the pounding of the Temple's drums, or the screams of the dying. All that mattered now was the staff, and how to use it.

Sensing his approach, the two sisters paused in their attacks, and stared at him as he trod towards them. Rage radiated from their perfect faces and a chill tainted the air around them. Not only had one of the coven been slain, but this fool had plundered from her corpse. The sorceress to the left held forth her iron staff threateningly, as the one to the right offered out a slender hand to Venarl, the other gripping her own staff. In a cold and demanding tone, she bade him obey her, adding power to her voice to bend his will. "You have taken what is not yours. Give it to me."

MG – Commander is still unharmed. Keep at it, he's a tough 'un! Nathra hasn't taken any wounds though, either. ((OOC: That's fine by the way! And I still remember to give her a looting opportunity when this scene has been played out))

Raven – The sorceresses aren't too happy. Being the power-grabbing arcane psychopaths that they are, they'll fight over the staff themselves. The sorceress that is talking is using "the voice" to get what she wants - i.e. she's adding magic to her words so that normal Druchii wouldn't be able to refuse her. I think Venarl's about to get a magic lesson the hard way. Unless of course, he does what he's told. Now that wouldn't be much fun, would it?

((OOC - I'm aware not everyone has been able to post, but at this point that's not a problem. When the time comes, if I need them to do something and life's thrown other priorities in the way, I'll just roll them along with the story. ;) ))

Kirael could see reinforcements pouring in from the rubble near the gate like rats through a woodpile. His lip curled in disdain as he saw who it was that was coming late to the party. Typically for those with their history, the Shadow Warriors were the last to arrive and had very nearly missed the boat again. Nonetheless, they were of Nagarythe stock - albeit debased - and would be good shots. There wasn't much the lithe assassin could do about bow-fire, save for staying out of its way, but it looked like the enemy were intent on closing. Readying his swords, he prepared to defend the Druchii command.

His mind drifted back to his time at the Temple, not by way of a daydream, but as a focus. There he remembered the lessons he'd received in guarding a companion's back in the event of making a fighting retreat. Kirael had no intention of retreating, but there was no shortage of backs to guard. Taking up a position close to the General he prepared to defend him against the stealthy attacks of the Shadow Warriors.

Stay close to the General, act as a bodyguard. When it comes to stealthy killing he wants to make sure that Assassin > Failed Druchii ;)

Venarl hadn’t expected a warm reception, simply gazing into their eyes he knew that he stood by foes far greater than any eagle or Asur. As he moved closer it was as if he had walked through a wall of ice a chilling reminder of their homeland. As the Witch spoke the world began to haze slightly as her dark magic was unleashed upon him. H knew full well that this was only a mere taste of what was to come; he was upstart to them, a mere irritant standing in the way of their glory. Despite this, Vernal was determined to keep a hold of the staff.

“Mistresses of the dark arcane winds”

A dull ache swept through him as he spoke. Trying to hide the pain he continued.

“One of your glorious sisters has fallen, our soldiers fight valiantly yet it is only through your might that we shall be saved from these beasts”
He could see the frustration in the witches eyes as Venarl did not give in to her demands, he knew full well she was only humouring him by listing to his words, yet he was relieved to see it. The witch however obviously enjoyed torturing him as the dull ache became a sharp pain that washed over him. He fell to his knees still keeping eye contact with her, his voice now straining slightly.

“Did you ever think that the mages of the Asur hunted your sister?” Venarl let out a cry of pain.

“If you take the staff you shall be next…let me guard the staff for you …until the time is right for you to wield it…I to them an just another warrior … they would not suspect me to wield the staff…I can protect you both in more ways than one”

Venarl hit the floor gasping for air as the pain became more consistent. Still grasping the staff in his hand he knew he had to bide his time one wrong move and he knew he was dead. He dared not look at them as he waited for their reply half of him expected his life to end that very moment.

Nathra should not have been surprised that the Khainite refuted her orders, but for some reason she thought the other woman would see sense and realise the importance of the task she had been given. Instead, she had rebuked the shade, seemingly out of spite, and now the entire army might suffer for her stupidity. Though Nathra, too, detested being told what to do - she was the head of a House, she had royal blood, it was her right to be in charge of the 'lesser' folk, and to Nathra, Khainites were the lowest of the lot. However, there were bigger things at stake than their pride; a fact which seemed lost on the impetuous disciple.

From the comfortable chair in which she now sat, Nathra placed her sword across her shapely thighs and winked at the commander - it was too good an opportunity not to. But the Asur had other worries than her, the Khainite had decided she wanted a piece of the commander for herself, and seemed hellbent on claiming it.

For now, Nathra would watch.

Nathra will remain seated for as long as possible. She'll be watching the commander to see how he fights, same with Asilah. She will be ready to act at an instants notice in case one or both of them turn on her.

Gaelus ran with his contingent to the command group. The eagles constantly harassing the druchii forces around them, himself included. Once such eagle seemed to have more hatred for the Asur mage-prince than Lord Thaeken's flayers as his efforts to get to Gaelus resulted in the standard's grim totem receiving further mistreatment. An arrow thunked into a nearby swordsman aiming for him and Gaelus muttered a silent word of thanks to the sharpshooter looking out for him.

Behind him, he heard the roars of the Hydra at the gate. With a brief glimpse he noticed things weren't going so well. The beastmasters were all but finished and the eagles were making a mess of the skirmish. I guess thats why they call it the eagle gate, he muttered to himself in an attempt to lighten his mood. As the last beastmaster fell, the hydra erupted in rage and began rampaging on friend and foe alike. Gaelus knew that save some miracle, the druchii were in a very tight spot.

They arrived finally at the command group. Gaelus bowed hastily. Lord General, Saulk leads the assault at the gates but the situation is dire. The beastmasters are all dead. Eagles harangue from above and... I see the misguided souls old Nagarythe approaching from the rear , he said the last bit with a snarl. Get your group to safety from the eagles in mill where you will be better able to issue your orders and use the sorceresses freely. I'll manage your rear and flank..

With that Gaelus quickly spoke out to the nearby warriors, organizing an escort for the Lord General. He knew his efforts were probably useless. In the back of his mind, he knew his best chances of survival were to stay with the strongest of the army. Hopefully, an opportunity to survive would present itself while with them.

Gaelus will encourage the command group to get to the mill

"Isha weeps for you!" called the Commander, as he noted Nathra's wink. Continuing his battle, the High Elf Commander brought his elegant blade down in an arc aimed at Asilah's shoulder. She twisted out of the way, tapping the blade with her own sword before lunging again with her dagger. The Commander grunted and lurched backwards as it tickled his throat, then recovered his sword and brought it down again in a two-handed strike aimed to cleave her in two. She jumped back over the ruined furniture and the sword clanged as it struck stone. Noticing Nathra sat in the chair, she arched a brow and called out, "Don't you want to assist at some point?"

Before she could hear an answer, the High Elf hero charged at her, his blade aimed at her belly. "Asuryan's flame guide me!" he roared, determined to be rid of his uninvited guests.

Beneath the shadows of the gates, things were getting out of hand. The hydra howled mournfully as it slowly succumbed to its wounds. Slowing, swaying, staggering from side to side, it was assaulted from the air by talons ripping at its flesh and shot at from safe range by the tide of Nagarythi reinforcements pouring through the outer gate. With a last display of hate the beast spewed out a cloud of noxious bile which seared the flesh off any within range, friend and foe alike. Then the body crashed down, the heads waving at the end of their long necks for a moment before they too thudded down onto the marble flagstones. A cheer erupted from the High Elf forces, and it was enough to shake the morale of the Druchii host.

Again the musician's horn blasted. "Forget the Inner Gate." snarled General Thaekan, grabbing Kirael by the scruff of his neck. "Where is this passage you speak of? Show us!" Kirael described the map, how through the granary there was a hidden doorway somewhere that led to a tunnel through the mountains. Heeding his words and those of Cade, the General's eyes narrowed as he realised his options were few.

"Standard bearer! I command you to form a rear guard. There's no use waiting for death here." Furious that his efforts had been threatened in this manner, the General was now on the back foot. If they could get through into the tunnel it would be far more difficult to be cut down by an entire army. Scanning the scene before him, he watched as the Temple of Khaine threw itself against their hated kin from the Shadowlands. He could not be sure who fought with more vengeance. The first ranks were like a slaughter house, whilst the lines of Shadow Warriors behind shot hundreds of arrows through the air. Unlike the archers of the gate defences, each one of these projectiles was aimed with deadly finesse. "Get back! To the granary! Leave those idiots at the Inner Gate. They will make for a good distraction."

The General was relying upon the vigilance of the sisters of dhar in keeping the swooping eagles at bay. Instead, their attentions were now turned to a Druchii of little significance. Like cats toying with an injured bird, they prowled around Venarl, jabbing at him with tongues of back magic that left his nerves afire. "Let YOU wield the staff?" The sorceress threw back her head and laughed, her coven sister joining her. "How absurd. You deem yourself fit for such an arcane weapon? Foolish boy."

With a hiss she lifted her staff up and forwards, aiming the tip at his body. The other surviving sorceress pouted with curiosity as her sister called out a string of caustic words, before blasting the Temple servant with a shot of icy dhar. Venarl curled into a ball, gripping the Asur staff. With a howl the energy met him, and he felt as if he was being torn apart. The pain was excruciating. "Ready to meet Khaine?"

No... no, not yet. He felt his body chill, cold like the frozen north. Yet through this his will drove him forth. Will to live, to see, to find out what this new opportunity would reveal. The staff in his hands began to feel warm, and then like a ball of heat erupting from him, the dhar exploded outwards, countered by the stone at the head of the Asuri weapon which glowed brilliantly. Venarl stood, and the two sorceresses stepped backwards, surprised and angered at his avoidance of death. The two began to pull in more fell power to cast a spell. They didn't see the hydra in it's death throes behind them, nor the green cloud of acidic gas spew from its many maws. Venarl dashed towards the retreating command group, just in time to see the flesh melt from the bones of the sorceresses.

MG - The Commander is focussing on Asilah. Just bear in mind that if he were on a tabletop, he'd be a hero. Might need more than one of you to bring him down.

JC - On the back foot now, retreating to the granary. It's not far, it's all about defence though.

Raven - The staff's yours now matey. You'll be learning slowly how to use it. But you're on the path of a mage now. As with any new mages, I'll be taking experience and likely power into consideration each time you'll need to use magic. Odds are it'll miscast or not be that effective at first. But practice makes perfect.

((OOC - Syjahel is out for now. I'll be writing her character out shortly, but will be keeping it open. So no glorious death just yet. We have space for 2 more now so if you know anyone who'd be interested, head to the OOC thread ;) ))

Why would Isha weep for me? Ah, I must someday perish, as must we all. But she will weep for you momentarily.

The fight, didn't exactly rage back and forth, the other female was pressed hard, dodging the commanders blows, though she did manage to put him on the back seat for a single moment. In a more ideal circumstance, that would have been the time to strike, but Nathra was hoping for a more personal encounter - which the khainite had ruined for her. Besides, only cowards stabbed people in the back while their attention was held elsewhere.

"Don't you want to assist at some point?" the other female called after she dodged a vicious two-handed blow that would have carved her in twain. Nathra smiled. The Asur commander renewed his assault. He showed remarkable skill, were Nathra to fight him one on one she would be hard pressed to gain the upper hand. But he had two of them to worry about, and could not afford to leave his back open to the seated shade for long.

"At some point, perhaps. Consider this punishment for not doing as you were told." If she timed it right, she would be able to strike to save the Khainites life and also put the commander in his place, that place being at the end of her sword. Nathra was a hunter, the commander was her prey, Asilah had interfered into that, the shade wished to teach other female a lesson, but killing her wasn't exactly the proper way to teach for one could not learn if they were dead.

Nathra, though giving the impression of being relaxed, is tense and ready to propel herself into the action. If Asilah goes down or genuinely needs help Nathra will leap into the fray, otherwise she will continue to watch.
