Damn. She knew they would not believe her. But what could she have said instead? Now they looked annoyed, almost angry. Zarathi suddenly realized that even if they had rescued her, they were still guards.

“As you wish,” she said quickly, raising her hands in a calming gesture.

Guards. Ones who were earning their bread by beating and killing other elves.

Zarathi reached to her pockets for a scroll, carefully wrapped up in a piece of linen. She unfolded the cloth only so much to make the seal visible and handed the letter over to the crossbow shooter.

Soldiers, used to violence, quickly angering about any dissent.

“It would be really stupid from me to speak about a letter from the drachau and not have one,” said she in a friendly manner. “Please, take a look.”

Sure, the woman had been amiable so far. But maybe she would smile on her even while tying her to a torture rack.

“If you cannot go with me, could you please at least warn me if there is something else I should know? Any other rules besides the curfew, the reason no one is allowed to the streets, this kind of stuff? I really do not want to cause trouble. And could you by any chance give me directions to the town hall at least?"
Zarathi was talking to wash away their suspicion and her own fear.

Watchers who most of all liked to watch elves scream.

She really hoped they would cease to question her soon. Then, alone in the night, she could take a deep breath again - if only for a while.

Zarathi shows the guards the letter from drachau and tries to chat. She wants to know about Everains laws and current state. She suspects the watchers do not want to prolong the conversation though and once she receives a sign of this, she asks for directions to the town hall and leaves. But if they are willing to feed her with information, she is going to stay for a while longer.

The woman jumped, eventually, which was something of an irritating factor to Valin. If she had jumped immediately they would have been away while the abominations wasted time battering down the door leaving them none the wiser. Instead she jumped out, possibly injuring herself, though with the amount of screaming happening anyway Valin couldn’t be sure, and then the infected followed. It is sorely tempting to just run off and let them eat her. he thought of his feet briefly. But I’ve been doing too much walking and running today, so lets kill them.

Drawing upon the power he’d drawn earlier in case he needed to heal the woman he fed it into himself to strengthen him and moved to the right to engage one of the infected.

Valin will push the power he had gathered last turn to heal the woman into his muscles to boost his strength. He’ll attack the one on the right first, moving in such a way as to hopefully put the one he is attacking between him and the next one. He’ll aim for the head to try and bash their brains out. He’ll also draw some extra magic in case he needs to heal himself.

The ghoul attacked Se'alara like a creature possessed, it's arms flailing wildly as it's legs propelled it crazily towards her without a thought for self-preservation. Immediately on the back burner, swipes and grabs bombarded the lithe young khainite and the first few swings of her blades were purely defensive. Only once was she nearly grabbed around her delicate neck, but her quick reflexes quickly saw her back-hand it harmlessly aside. In the same motion, she knelt, and shimmied past the creature as it over-extended it's reach.

She followed the motion with a powerful blow from her left-handed knife, one strike was all it took to pulverise it's head and the clammy body toppled onto the street in a fit of death. The khainite looked up the street to witness Andiril taking on the remaining two, it didn't look as if he needed any assistance, nevertheless Se'alara jogged up to help him out. The skilled guard had finished off the first one and was now toying with the second, having cut it's arms off he stepped back and coiled himself up to finish the ghoul off. The monster attacked and Andiril finished it off with a powerful overhead blow, very nearly slicing it in two halves.

He turned to face the khainite as she approached. "Of course he doesn't like it!" He grinned, all too knowingly. "Perverts seldom appreciate people prying into their affairs." Looking at his rune-etched sword, Andiril frowned at the lumps of blood dripping from it, he looked around and found a ragged cloth hanging from a battered stall and wiped away the grime.

"The Temple isn't far. Get dressed and we'll go when you're ready."

* * * * *

Boosted by the power of light, Clavisson felt the power invigorate him, slightly, there wasn't a great deal of Light energy in the near vicinity but he had enough to last for a short while - hopefully the meagre amount was plenty for the encounter. The mage moved as if a blur, the zombie, which was charging, now appeared as if in slow motion. He easily circumnavigated his way around the half-dead-half-living obstacle and proceeded to batter it around it's balding pate with his staff. It took several blows, the head became more and more broken like an egg being whacked with a spoon, until it was obliterated completely.

The mage could feel a slight headache beginning to form as the ghoul splattered to the street like a falling tree. Time was beginning to reassert itself, the first creature was nearly upon Clavisson and it's sluggish speed had now become an impetuous, headlong charge. There was no time to run for the creature would surely catch him at the speed it was running, but at least he had neutralised one monster and was no longer boxed in. With grasping claws, it was only a few foot away and would be tearing at his throat within moments.

* * * * *

The albino chuckled mirthlessly at Taldeins words. "You do not desire greatness? Destiny may say otherwise, if you believe in such and you clearly do, despite your words to the contrary. Was it destiny that brought you here?" The stranger looked around the temple briefly, as if noticing it for the first time. "What of this place?"

"My name is irrelevant, as is yours in the grand scheme of things. I am simply a dancer among the shadows, here to welcome you, to gauge your worth, to see you with my own eyes." He thumbed the handles of his daggers either threateningly or non-threateningly, it was hard to judge. "We also need to test you, ready to fight an old, blind man?"

"Fear not, I won't kill you."

* * * * *

Valin was amazed at the idiocy of the whole situation and had clearly worked up some stress with which to compel himself into action - these two creatures would be the perfect targets to vex his frustrations on. The mage stepped round to his right, drawing the ghouls into a nice queue for him to welcome into oblivion. Using his pre-accumulated magic he invigorated himself with energy and gripped his staff two-handed for the extra thwacking power it would provide.

The first creature reached him in seconds and Valin swung his staff as hard as he could towards the monsters sodden face. He scored a solid blow. Somehow, instinctively, the creature had ducked the impending blow so that the force landed on it's spine, which seemed to crack under the pressure. Stepping back as the creature wobbled towards him, Valin struck again, this time he swung sideways and scored another solid hit. The pallid face of the creature caved in like a deflated ball as it careened into the wall of the house to Valins right.

But the second creature was right behind it and pounced at the mage with outstretched claws.

Se'alara has finished off all her attackers and has rejoined Andiril. He is ready to leave when Se'alara is ready.

Clavisson has another ghoul to deal with, it's charging at him with outstretched claws and is but a few feet away. His magic has run out of power and there is scant little left to draw on. He'll have to fight this one without any magical assistance.

Taldein is still in conversation with the assassin, who has clearly stated that they should fight. If Taldein doesn't make the first move then the other khainite probably will. Just remember, he's there to test Taldein, not to kill him.

Valin has successfully dealt with the first one (not a threat for now but could still be 'alive') and has the second one pouncing on him - it's barely two foot away and is flying towards him, it's claws aimed for his chest.

Se'alara bit back an angry retort at Andiril's insult to the crimson god; his words were clearly intended to be amusing, they were not. Still she needed him as a guide and his sword was useful so she would forgive him, this time at least. Besides it was clear that every elf would be needed if Evarin was ever to become a functioning town again, they could ill afford internal struggle. He was clearly eager to be off but the novice had a little looting to do first. Wiping her daggers clean on the nearest corpse she sheathed them before jogging over to the fallen guard. With any luck his amulet would still be in place and if the other guards she had encountered were any indication he ought to have a sword more suited than her daggers to this kind of brutality. One never knew, he might even have a little money and a girl had to eat. Perhaps Andiril would be offended by her corpse searching but she found she didn't care that much.

Her search complete Se'alara retrieved her robe and slung it over her shoulders
"Lead on," she gestured with an open hand

A little looting is in order. She is looking for the protective amulet which if found she will loop around her waist (assuming it will fit, if not she will have to wrap it round her upper arm), she will not wear it round her neck as the guards do since she isn't one. She will also see what weapons he has and if he has any valuables. This done she will follow Andiril towards the temple.

Zarathi showed them the letter. The female guard looked at the seal and nodded approvingly. The male looked less than pleased but he was not in a position to argue, the squat female guard inclined her head back to the guard post to indicate that he should report back. He left without saying another word.

Alone now, the two women walked a leisurely pace up the street while Zarathi questioned her immediate ally. "The reason no one is allowed out should be obvious: Everain is beset by a plague, many citizens have died, some have returned from the beyond to spread this foul contagion further. If you encounter any infected, dismember and decapitate them, anything less and they may rise again."

That monster is unlike anything I have seen. It's not a victim, of that I am sure, but perhaps... it may be spreading the disease?
The guard shuddered, clearly unsettled by the thought. "Ah, there is the City Hall, you can see the spire from here." Zarathi followed the guards pointed finger and could see the spire rising high over the more mundane buildings of the city.

Further up the road, a darkness blacker than night descended towards the two woman. They stared in amazement as the tiny glow of a million eyes flickered at them. The dark crossed paths with the low-light emitted by an ensconced torch and revealed the source of the darkness - rats, vermintide! It took a few moments for Zarathi to realise the horde was in various states of decomposition. The two women gasped in horror.

"Follow the spire! Run!" The stout guard did not wait for Zarathi to respond, she spun on the spot and sprinted away down the street, most likely to report what she had seen to the guard post.

Zarathi, taking the female's advice, ran down the side street towards the City Hall.

The eerie feeling was exhilarating. As the speed of light accelarated Clavisson's metabolism, he could run circles around the charging zombie-like creature.
Avoiding effortlessly the creature's arms, the detective would knock it on the head with his staff at various angles.
Stomp on the top of head. The skull flattened, but the creature stood.
Stomp on the cheek. The face exploded, but the creature stood.
Stomp on the nose. A hole remained where the nose was, but the creature stood.
Stomp on the eye. The globe emerged with the staff, but the other eye was still functioning, and the creature stood.
Stomp on the ear. The head was no longer looking like anything words can describe, but the creature stood.
Stomp on the chin, or whatever was at the logical place; the impact covered the remaining eye, the creature seemed disoriented, but the creature stood.
Stomp top down, and the head was no longer able to contain what seemed to have been the brain, which emptied on the creature's shoulders. The creature fell down.

By Lord Malekith's smoky helmet, how good it feels to hammer down a foe like I just did, thought the Son of the Jail whose experience in combats was scarce, especially in winning combats.
That was the end of the aggressive creature, and that was the end of the speeding effect, too.

Clavisson realized that the last creature was rushing at him from the street corner.
A quick glance told him that its momentum was enough to catch the detective before he could start running for safety.
No chance to run, fighting was the only option.

Taking firmly his staff with two hands, the Black Guard acolyte rotated it over his head, gaining momentum.
The hard end of the staff whirled against a rushing zombie too clumsy to escape it, that was bound to cause severe damage.
In case such damage would not suffice, the detective would rely on the longer range of his staff to remain out of the creature's grasp.
With only one opponent, and a slow one, to take care, he should easily remain untouched and get some opportunity to kick the creature's head.

Strongest possible blow at the incoming creature with sharp end of staff.
Next, keeping creature at bay thanks to staff's longer range; kicks on the head as often as possible.

Taldein stood, unmoving, at the other khainites challenge. The white-eyed assassin shrugged, then pounced as he drew his two long-knives in a mimicry of a pouncing lion. Slow to react (in comparison to his opponent) Taldein unsheathed his draich and brought it round in a side-sweep, which his assailant ducked with ease even as he brought one dagger to hit Taldein in the chest with it's pommel. The second dagger struck a second later aiming to trip Taldein but the shadowy khainite stepped over this blow even as he jumped back to avoid the first.

The hooded khainite was fast, almost too fast for a mortal and Taldein could feel the force of his blows even though they had missed him - as Taldein wore no armour even a pommel blow to his chest would incapacitate him. He had given himself some room to recover but the albino wasn't slowing his momentum. The draich slashed and parried furiously as the daggers flashed in and around his torso at blinding speeds, several attacks could easily have cut him, though it seemed his opponent had no intention of actually inflicting wounds upon Taldein. Leaving himself open, the white-eyed assassin kicked him two-footed solidly in the chest, the Draich'Arha stumbled back several steps but did not fall.

The assassin rolled away and came gracefully to his feet several yards distant. He eyed Taldein with his cold, dead stare and motioned for him to attack.

Vailn had easily dealt with the first zombified citizen but the second was moments from tearing the mages heart out. Instinctively, as the mage was still recovering from his first assault, Valin brought his staff directly upwards and caught the creature mid-jump, with some satisfaction he vaulted the creature over him and slammed it into the ground behind him. Recovering his posture, he gripped his staff two-hand and smashed the butt into the creatures head, which exploded in a spray of skull and brain pieces.

Turning back to the other infected citizen, he could see blood and bile smeared across the wall he had launched the creature into. It was slowly try to get to it's feet but Valin would be damned if he gave such a loathsome monster another shot at him. Stepping over with his staff he again launched the butt end of it into the creatures face, exploding it's brain and putting it out of action for good. The life-mage breathed a sigh of relief, but he still had to woman to worry about - or not worry about, as the case may be.

"Please, help me stranger. I think my ankle is broken." She sounded just as pathetic as before, but at least she was no longer screaming the house down. From where he stood Valin could indeed see that the lady's ankle was broken, her shin bone protruded several centimetres from her flesh and the ligaments were all shredded and bloody.

* * * * *

Disapprovingly, Andiril looked on as Se'alara looted his fellow guards corpse for valuables. She took the pendant from his neck first of all, then looked around for anything else of worth. The guard had a large oval shaped shield gently gripped in his left hand, his weapon was a large double-bladed battle axe but the handle was splintered, not that such a heavy and imprecise weapon would have been of much use to someone as nimble as Se'alara. But her search wasn't totally wasted, around his belt she found a pouch of eleven gold pieces and a foot long poignard with a jeweled hilt tucked into his belt.

"It would appear I have stunned you into silence," Andiril mused when the two of them were underway once again. "You do realise the Drachau will give you a pendant of your own. And looting from the dead is frowned upon, y'know, but he won't care much, I warrant." The next stage of the journey was in silence as Andiril had clearly insulted the young khainite and was now just guiding Se'alara towards the temple, waiting for her to say something.

* * * * *

The zombie rushed at Clavisson, but the mage was ready for the challenge. Timing it just right, the mage swung his staff with all the force his less-than-ideal strength could muster. He hit the creature on the left arm with a resounding smack which tore the arm from the shoulder and vaulted the witless creature into the far wall of the alleyway. Taking advantage of his good fortune, the light mage quickly stepped up to his struggling foe and callously plastered it's brain matter across the street with the heel of his boot.

The last creature was less of a challenge, it had crawled halfway to Clavisson in the time it took the mage to best the other two infected citizens. Stepping over to the pathetic creature, Clavisson pinned it in place with his staff before pulverising it's head with his boot, a move, it seemed, the mage was becoming fond of. The Son of the Jail took a few moments to congratulate himself on his victory before returning to the main battle to help with the fight there.

One of the guards was clearly wounded, he defended himself as best as he was able with his sword while the other guards flanked him protectively. Those three and Seth had neutralised a goodly portion of the infected, with only half a dozen or so threatening them. Seth's armour was covered in blood and grime, not an inch of steal showed on either of his swords. The guards were similarly decorated, a good thing it was raining so hard as the mess would be washed off before long.

Seth was tackling two enemies and was quickly slicing them down to size. The three guards were slowly clearing away the other four. The fight looked all but won, though Clavisson could still render assistance if he was able.

Taldein is fighting the albino who has paused to wait for Taldein to attack.

Valin has beaten both the infected and now has the woman to deal with. She is pleading for his aid. Will he help her?

Se'alara has recovered some loot from the corpse - Guards Pendant, 11 Gold Pieces, Jeweled Poignard - Andiril is guiding her closer to the temple, she can still speak with him if she wishes (she will hopefully have arrived by the next Mod post - just need to finish a bit of plot/story before she can get there).

Clavisson has also beaten his attackers and has returned to the main fight. He can choose to assist if wishes to.

OOC: My dice seem to like mages, both Valin and Clavisson got sixes for everything! Need to finish up the Taldein/Valin story threads before we can get you all grouped together. Might be the next Mod post, if not it'll definitely be the one after that! Thank you for your patience ;)

The looting was a mixed bag, on the one hand she managed to find the guard's pendent still in place and she was able to pocket a little shiny, the dagger should fetch a decent price though she would never choose it over her anointed weapons. As to a larger blade he certainly had one, far too large for her tastes and broken to boot, she left it where it was and slipped back into her robe, still pristine white despite a sojourn in the mud. Re-joining her companion she found him to be a little testy, perhaps even hurt, he was young after all. Males were odd creatures

"I do not know your Drachau nor what she will do, besides who knows how quickly this infection might spread, I have no wish to arrive at her door drooling and forgetting which end of a blade to hold." She did not respond to his caution on the subject of looting, this was Naggaroth and the elf had proven himself unworthy of further existence. If his family wanted to hunt her down and reclaim their property they were more than welcome to the meagre spoils, she rather doubted they would.

"Tell me, I know little of Evarin, how old is this city? What is its trade? I am afraid temporal politics was not a subject well covered at my temple, it is rather remote." She tried to soften her voice, oddly enough she found she liked it more when Andiril smiled, bizarre that.

What is this game?, Taldein thought to himself. The leather strapped creature had unexpectedly attacked him while Taldein had pondered his previous statements. Luckily, the draich was always nearby and he was able to parry the elf's initial attacks. A few close blows woke up Taldein after his initial confusion and he now looked across the space to the elf. It appeared as if he was toying with him, whather it was simply cat and mouse or something far more dangerous, Taldein couldn't really tell. Either way, he cared not. He was here in the temple and a fight was what he found. He supposed he should have expected as much following the bloody handed god.

He waited for the next strike of the assassin and feinted wide arced counterattack before he pivoted on his toe at the last minute to bring the draich up in a terrible vertical slice. Letting the weight of the draich spin him about after his swing he sank to a crouch and rolled away from elf's next attack. The temple, already in disrepair, was suffering the consequences of the battle taking place. Already, the scars of their scuffle marked the surroundings.

You're not the only dancer among the shadows..., Taldein thought as he came up from his roll. With that, he muttered a word of power under his breath and extended the shadow of his blade to the body of the blind elf. Like an engineer's magnet, he felt his draich pulled to its shadow, ready to guide his strikes true to its highly mobile target. He paced forward, closing the gap and unleashed a fury of new blows at the elf.

Taldein will feint and counter to give him some space, attempt a spell to improve his accuracy and then rejoin the attack

After the second zombie had been torned apart and stomped to oblivion, Clavisson realized that he had done this feat with no arcane help. Mom would be so proud, he thought.
As adrenaline heated his blood like a concentrated Napolitan coffee, he danced with joy untill he nearly slippered on the brain matter which had widespread on the cobblestone.
Resuming his balance, he prepared for the next fight: a half body was slowly crawling at him with its single functioning arm, leaving behind a trail of entrails.
It was the kind of largely imbalanced fight that the Son of the Jail favoured.
The detective took the time to play with the crawling corpse for a couple of seconds, but there was little fun to get, and he cut it short - litterally.
How good it felt to be a winner!

The detective checked carefully, but there was no other creature left in the dark alley for him to take care or to avoid.
He could go and find Seth and the other guards. He gave a prudent glance at the other side of the house corner.
Clavisson evaluated the situation as rather safe:
one of the guards was wounded, but the other guards flanked him protectively against four opponents;
Seth was easily handling the other two zombie-like creatures.
The Son of the Jail was definitively no daredevil, but on the occasion he was happy to help an already winning fight.
Perfect time for a little practice with throwing daggers. The night was dark, but the Hysh practitioner was used to get the best of the dimmest light.
"Care for some help?"
Positioning behind the melee, he targeted one of the creatures which was not hidden by any guards, aiming at its face. With some luck, he could severe an eye or even hit the brain, which seemed to be a vulnerable spot.
When the fight would be over, he was confident to be able to recover all his daggers.

Nearing the fight, keeping himself in the rear, out of zombie's reach.
Throwing several daggers, aiming at zombie's faces, taking care to avoid "blue on blue" fire.
When fight will be over, will recover daggers.

OOC: how many throwing daggers is Clavisson supposed to have? - EDIT: 4

Beating the skulls in of the infected come undead seemed just as effective this time as it had last, though lacked somewhat in finesse. The irritating screaming of the idiot woman didn’t help matters much either. Swinging his staff around he brained the first which fell out of his way and let the second attack. He pushed it up and over him with his staff as it leapt at him, something he found inexplicably funny and then finished it off before it could find its feet again.

The woman was asking for help, in a less shrill tone and this time it seemed she wasn’t exaggerating, though how she managed to ruin her leg so badly from a second floor window Valin had no idea. He walked over to her. “You need to learn how to fall, breaking you leg from that height, really?” He hunkered down beside her and reached for the leg while drawing some magic. “Well at least I get some practice. Are we far from the drachau’s steading?”

Heal her leg, mainly for practices sake, ask about location.

“Fair point, my lady.” The guards shrug was light-hearted. “It was only an accurate guess.”

“Most assuredly," Andiril began as the pair walked side by side down the dark street. "You will know Everain is not a prominent city nor particularly elegant. It is a centre for commerce, slave-trading was once a popular pastime, though has accumulated merchants of differing breeds over the last few decades. Many of the guards were recruited from the mercenary barracks, more since the plague - you may surmise that I wasn’t one of them. Has our humble community already achieved city status?”

Andirils dark eyes flittered from shadow to shadow as he spoke, his voice conversational and firm, graduating to a loud whisper. Se’alara followed him through an alleyway wedged between two houses. As he stepped out the khainites guide took a quick, excessive look around before slowly crossing the street, his moonlit face scanning the vicinity like a silent, chirruping bird. The pointed apex of the wall Andiril reached glittered like tiny stars, sparkling by the brief parting of the stormy clouds; the sturdy gate was further proof that this property belonged to someone important. The guards' ears, no longer concealed by shadows or hair, were peculiar, they were not the knife-shaped ears one would expect for an elf, instead they looked... human.

He stood at the corner of the wall looking out into a wide, treeless area bathed in almost pitch blackness, only the faint glow of distant lamps told of the buildings at the opposite side of the courtyard. Apart from the ever lashing rain and the distant, almost silent sound of yet another skirmish, the dark night was eerily quiet. He had paused to scan the area while Se'alara crossed the road to join him, and spoke to her in a whisper when she eventually did.

"A city is judged only by its Legacy." The noble guard walked slowly into the darkness. "The Legacy of Everain is yet to begin."

The albino beckoned Taldein to attack with the wiggle of his fingers as they held the dagger forward. Back and forth the two shadow-dancers danced, blocking and feinting and dodging, but as hard as Taldein tried he just never seemed to get the upper hand. His feint and counter were easily recognized by his attacker, who had centuries in which to practice his skills, yet he let them pass with without comment as Taldein rolled away, ready to begin the assault anew.

Taldein could feel the sway of his word empower his draich. He attacked. Where his shadow danced, his blade struck. Preternaturally, the albino dodged, ducked, jumped, sidestepped and rolled his way around the draich as it glided for him again and again; the assassin had the cheek to not even use his weapons to parry or deflect Taldeins blows, he simply evaded them like the shadow he claimed to be. After, perhaps, more than half a dozen attempts at striking the assassin he rolled over Taldeins back as the khainite recovered from his latest attack.

Taldein spun to face the white-eyed elf once again, who now stood some eight foot distance. "You fight well, young one, though you lack discipline. Your style also seems familiar, were you taught in Ghrond? They are outcast to the honoured ways of the Drowned, the path you are set upon, a path that I have travelled." He looked to the entrance of the Temple, almost as if he were expecting someone, then returned his dead-eyed gaze back to Taldein. "There is still a little time. Shall we talk, or shall we fight some more?"

* * * * *

"A little late, don't you think?" Seth called over the dying din of the fight as he skilfully decapitated both his attackers with a crossing of his blades.

But Clavisson was not disheartened by his comrades rebuke, and launched a couple of his daggers at the zombies assaulting the other guards. One struck true and buried itself through the eye sockets of his target, popping both eyes, not that the creature was aware of its sudden blindness. The mages' second dagger missed by a hairs-breadth and whistled away down the street, potentially to never be see again.

The two hale guards quickly battered their targets into submission, bludgeoning the squishy skin and brains into fetid pools of filth. The wounded guard finished off the last of the horde with a neat decapitation. The three of them then went to work making sure each of the husks stayed down while Seth stepped over to Clavisson, his ever-present grin present.

"Don't they teach you Inquisitors to fight? You missed a good 'un!" The mages escort watched as his fellow guards 'cleaned up' the corpses, then lowered his tone to a scant whisper. "Our fellow guard is wounded, there's a good chance he will die, unless he becomes infected first, which seems all but certain. Is there anything you can do for him?"

* * * * *

Teary-eyed, the whimpering woman watched Valin approach with something bordering on hope etched across her face. She seemed to settle a little as the mage bent down over her to have a gander at the injury to her ankle. As Valin spoke to her he drew in some of the lingering life energies from the immediate vicinity and set his mind to work on the lady's injury.

"Learn to fall? I am just a housewife-" The woman groaned again as her bones clicked together, and whimpered like a child when the flesh and ligaments began to reform. She continued to talk, not seeming to realise her injury was mending. "You have an appointment with the Drachua?" Face flinching, she caught the wound as it was almost fully healed, and stared at it in shock. She looked at Valin, then back to the wound before flinching to Valin again. "You..." At a loss for words, the woman was silent for the first time.

The wound was not completely healed, though the bones had reknitted and the skin had mostly reformed, it would still take time for the wound to totally heal. There was still a high probability of the woman becoming infected, especially since her skin had broken and had been exposed to the atmosphere. But there was nothing more Valin could do for the lass and made to continue on his way to the City Hall.

"Thank you, stranger. I won't forget this kindness. Come and visit when the plague has dissipated."

* * * * *

Zarathi ran for all she was worth, casting frequent glances behind her to check the measure of the ravening horde chasing her down the street. The Spire was still far ahead of her, in the skyline to her left. The street she ran was thin, apparently a back-alley between two rows of residential compartments or warehouses, and cluttered with the general detritus of a poorly maintained area. Another glance told her that she wasn't running fast enough and the rats would soon be snapping at her heels.

A few more moments and she burst out onto another road, this one leading north and south. The spire was north-east of her position, so the southern route was to be ignored in favour of heading north. A short ways up the street she could hear the horde skittering out into the road behind her and still closing the gap. It appeared that no matter how fast she ran the horde was quickly gaining, but she was not out of options yet.

The road ran more or less at a gradual upwards incline, on the right side the houses were boarded up, though not all looked so secure that she couldn't squeeze herself into safety. The door of another house stood ajar. The porches of one or two houses also looked climbable, though not easily so for one unaccustomed to it and one mistake could see her devoured by undead vermin.

((OOC: If you could all check the OOC thread, please, need to go over several things - much obliged 8) ))

Feel free to question Andiril some more if you fancy.

The fight has reached a stand still with both parties uninjured. It's up to Taldein if he wishes to talk or fight some more.

Seth is asking Clavisson if there is anything he can do for the wounded guard. Is there?

Valin has mended the lady's foot - remember that she has invited him to visit when he has some free time - and is continuing on his way. Valin can stay and chat or continue. There's not a lot for Valin to do now, I'm afraid, will try and get you grouped up with someone (Clavisson) in the next Mod post.

Zarathi has a choice. She can try and enter one of the decrepit houses, through a window or a door. She can try and climb a porch to get on a roof (a far riskier proposition) or simply run and pray!

Zarathi's body turned to retreat while she gasped in horror. Perhaps she was even screaming, she could not tell herself. For all Khaine's bloodlust, dead rats, thousands of them, rolling through the streets and chasing her of all elves, how had she deserved this? Why was she fleeing through this disgusting street, jumping over pools of filth and dodging old debris, instead of polishing the boots of some clean, respectable and insufferably arrogant guardsman?

She turned left into a more pleasant street and the rats followed her. They were closer every time she looked behind, their dirty teeth eager to taste her precious flesh. She could not outrun them. She could hardly climb to a roof, as because of the never ending rain her hands were too wet. She would need to find shelter in a nearby house and she would need it quickly.

Then she saw an open entrance a few steps ahead. Without thinking about it, she ran there, burst in and slammed the door behind her. Only then, after she had taken a single deep breath, a slimy thought sneaked in her mind. If the entrance was open, what happened to the inhabitants? Had a malevolent creature paid a visit? Was it still lurking in there?
Zarathi laid hand on her sword, turned around and gazed into the dark.

Zarathi runs into the house with open door and barricades it behind her as she can, paying attention not to leave any rat-sized holes, if possible. Then she goes deeper into the house. If the rats just run alongside the entrance, she returns to the street; otherwise she will try to get to the roof.

Se'alara walked in silence listening to Andiril talk, it was a way to pass the time if nothing else. These roads seemed to have avoided the worst of the plague, or perhaps its victims had already shambled off to pastures new.

"Has our humble community already achieved city status?” he asked, more of a wondering really

"You would know better than I," she murmured in reply, in truth her attention was not on his words but on their surroundings. There was something bothering her guide about this place and if there was one thing an education in the Plain of Spiders could give you it was an appreciation for those with local knowledge and an ear for the out of place. A hand resting lightly on the hilt of each dagger her eyes flickered across the scene. This appeared to be a little more opulent than the other places they had been, a sign perhaps that they were nearing the centre of the city and the spires of the powerful. Scanning the road revealed nothing of note, though with the rain seeming to beat ever harder a fresh horde might be round the next bend and be on them with little warning. No what caught her roving eye was Andiril's ears.

They were round, very strange, she had known elves with pointed ears, elves with cropped ears, even elves with no ears (what a night that had been) but never one with round ears. Indeed the only place she had seen such things were on... humans. The idea was bizarre for clearly no member of the lesser races could play at being Druchii and hope to pass muster. No he could not possibly be other than an elf... perhaps some childhood disease... She let it pass for now, she still needed him after all. Never the less she would keep, if anything, a closer eye on him than before.

Not a great deal going on

The weight of his draich was carried forward by the success of his spell. Every strike follow it's shadow with precision. Still the albino creature showed some sort of preternatural reflexes that allowed him to evade almost every strike. The melee came to a brief pause when elf turned to face Taldein once again. He spoke somewhat of Taldein's past and present skill before addressing a question.

There is still a little time. Shall we talk, or shall we fight some more?, the elf spoke. He waited for Taldein's answer.

Taldein considered his options. He didn't come here for a fight, he came for guidance or insight. Whether or not a fight was how this was gained, he didn't know. He decided and addressed the albino.

The threat had been repelled.
Clavisson's not-too-decisive help was met with an ironic "Don't they teach you Inquisitors to fight?"
He replied "If anybody ever asks you why I was not selected as a Black Guard, tell'em that's probably for a good reason.
By the way, could someone double-check the three corpses I left behind the corner?"

As the guards finished off the opponents, the detective proceeded on to recover his two thrown daggers. Ammo was scant, he could not afford to waste it.
One dagger was found pinned on a guard's boot stamping a skull. "Watch out. Don't blunt the blade." He recovered the dagger, cleaned off the greyish matter and thanked the guard.
With an eye sharpened by all the light Hysh could concentrate, he looked for the other dagger, which had landed a little further in the dark alley.

As he came back, Seth asked him in a whisper: "Our fellow guard is wounded, there's a good chance he will die, unless he becomes infected first, which seems all but certain. Is there anything you can do for him?"
The son of the Jail had developed a real talent to maintain tortured people alive and able to perceive pain. There was a chance to make himself useful, using his talent in a creative way.
Icing on the cake, the inquisitor apprentice could try and determine the answer to the question that was asked, about the presence of the infection.

Clavisson replied: "I'm not gifted enough as a tormentor to know how to heal. But I have maintained alive for weeks some people that were badly wounded.
Let me examine him while someone gets a doctor.
About the disease, I may find out while I examine him. May your Lord's amulet have protected him from the infection."

1. Recover the two thrown daggers (Hysh helping for the dagger sent farthest, if no success naturally).
2. Examine the wounded guard:
2.1. With some inspiration from Hysh, determine the Truth about the guard's infection.
2.2. If found infected, tell Seth.
2.3. If not found infected, maintain the guard alive as much as the Son of the Jail eventual torturer's skills allows. Pain brings adrenaline and desire for revenge, that improves survival odds.
2.4. If the power of Light is necessary to slow down the guard's metabolism while someone gets help, so be it.
Practice of magic, if any, will always be concealed under Inquisitor's ceremonial, true or faked.

OOC: 2 daggers thrown, how many recovered?

Valin gained some satisfaction fixing her leg, though he continued to harbour resentments about the utter inability she had to handle a fall. A second floor window wasn’t exactly high up. She did seemed somewhat shocked to be healed, but that was to be expected when the learning of magic by men was frowned upon under Malekith’s rule. As he finished healing her he stood and brushed dirt off his robes, almost missing what she had to say. An invitation to visit, though Valin was almost certain he’d never take her up on it.

“Thanks for the offer, I might just do that. Assuming of course this city is still here a week or month from today.” With a cheerful wave he continued on towards the Drachau.

Head off to his destination.

Zarathi slammed the door behind her and quickly checked for any rat-sized holes, then sighed a breath of relief not to find any any for she had no wish to be devoured by the vermin swarm. As a precaution, she quickly found a chair from a chaotic pile of furniture to block the door with. It was unlikely the rats could open the door themselves but it was better safe than sorry. The decor was shambolic, and the house permeated a musty stench. It appeared the house had previously been looted, probably why the door was open. The shade had no wish to return to the streets, at least until the rats were no longer a threat, which meant she could explore the house a little.

Each room was just as unwelcoming as the first and the stench lingered like a stain in the air. Upstairs was a large bedroom which had also been ransacked. A four-posted double-bed dominated the centre and was both empty and dirty. Several large cupboards lined the back wall and an overturned dresser sat in the corner, it's draws littered the floor like a maze; whoever had looted the house had done a very thorough job. The shade stepped past the bed to look out the window and noticed the naked body of a woman with her throat cut lying in the corner of the room, a swamp of stagnant blood pooled around her days-old corpse.

The view from the window showed the spire to her left not too far away. She could see a segment of a circular courtyard at the end of the street and, thankfully, the vicinity seemed rat free. It was a single story jump to the road below.

* * * * *

"Ah, it appears we have company." The khainite said in his monotonous drawl. "We can duel with words some other time. You show promise." And then the assassin bowed before stepping back. A second later a portal appeared behind him and in moments the albino had disappeared within. The portal vanished but a moment later.

* * * * *

Andiril led Se'alara in silence. She had asked for information concerning the city of Everain, and the guard answered willingly enough but his charges' inquisitiveness was short-lived and he seemed a little disappointed not to have the opportunity to share what knowledge he possessed. They walked in the darkness for some time before, eventually, they arrived at the temple.

"Here we are, my lady. I'll take my leave of you now. Good luck." His salute was brisk and the noble-born was swiftly on his way. Now that his mission was finished he seemed all but uninterested in Se'alara. Andiril gave her a crisp nod before jogging back the way they had come.

The khainite looked upon a squat building, no bigger than a small cottage, made of black stone chipped into gaunty angles. A set of only two steps led up to the terrace on which the entrance sat and the basalt double-doors stood ominously open. The building consisted of a single room which contained a wide set of stairs leading downwards some seventy feet. Fountains of blood, dry and crusted, were situated at either side and a rivulet of similarly decayed blood ran between the stairs.

As Se'alara stepped into the temple, she thought she heard the echo of voices.

* * * * *

Clavisson retrieved both of his daggers and returned to Seth, who was looking at his fellow guard impassively. The mage inspected the wounded guard and even without resorting to magical assistance it was clear he was infected. The wound gaped and pulsed of it's own accord and his blood was garish purple in colour. When The Son of the Jail informed Seth, the look on his face told Clavisson the guard already knew the man was afflicted.

With grim resolve Seth decapitated his fellow guard with a cross motion of his twin blades. The guard never seen it coming. "It was as I feared. A mercy that he didn't suffer long." He said, wiping his swords clean on the mans tunic.

"Come, my friend. I do not wish to linger more than necessary." With a curt nod to the other guards, Seth continued to lead the mage towards the city hall. They ran up the street in which Clavisson had killed the other creatures but the guard passed them without comment and before long they were once again on the main street heading West.

* * * * *

The woman smiled at Valin as he thanked her, her eyes still betraying her shock. The mage hurriedly moved off, eager to be away from the silly girl and closer to his destination. The road led East but soon turned South and joined to a main road, from what Valin could determine, and that road led straight to his destination.

As he stepped onto the street the mage noticed two figures some distance away. One looked to be a guard and the other carried a crystal-topped staff. The armoured one stood a foot taller than the robed one, whom Valin could ascertain was a mage judging from the faint magical aura he sensed about him. Valin now needed to go go more or less South, but the two strangers further along this road had piqued his curiosity.

Zarathi has a chance for looting before the next Mod post. I don't know what sort of things she would be most interested in (feel free to tell me in the OOC) but she can search the bedroom and/or the kitchen. Otherwise, there's not much else for her to do other than continue on her way to the city hall.

The assassin has disappeared. Taldein is left in the underground chamber..

Se'alara has just entered the temple. The stairs lead down to the chamber where Taldein is.

Clavisson has retrieved both his daggers. You get 4 in total, as per the CC process (would happily have given you 5 but Marcho has only taken 4). Seth has led him back to the main street and after a time he can now see Valin ahead of them along the same street.

Valin can also see Seth and Clavisson further along the road.

OOC: Really sorry it took me so long to get a Mod post done, and for it's shortness. I hope not to absent myself for so long again - not exactly been in the most robust of mental states recently.

Anyway, Se'alara and Taldein have 'stumbled' upon each other, same with Valin and Clavisson. Feel free to post as often as you can manage, you might get a bit of conversation going!

I'll more than likely get everyone grouped together in the next Mod post.

As Andiril returned, somewhat stiffly, to his duties Se'alara studied the temple. He had not been wrong in describing it as disappointing. Smaller than the house she had grown up in it lacked grandeur to be sure. Crafted of thick black stone almost clumsily chiselled it lacked beauty too. For one used to the grand surroundings and bleak views of the Temple of Bloody Joy Evarin's house of worship seemed little more than a bloody shack.

There was blood though, on the walls and in what would have in better times have been fountains. Without proper care it was crusted and flaking in stagnant pools but never the less it was clear enough that this was as close as this benighted town had to a temple of Khaine and that being so she felt compelled to pay her respects to whatever devotees might remain or to clear out any looters or afflicted profaning the holy space.

Walking into the dimly lit space Se'alara kept a hand on the pommel of each dagger though she kept them sheathed for the moment. A second later she drew them silently as she heard dim voices bouncing off the walls. In a structure like this, almost an artificial cave, it was near impossible to tell how far away the voices were and she could not pick out what they were saying. There appeared to be only one way in however so she continued on down the steps. After a mere few moments she emerged out into a larger space. A vaulted ceiling supported by columns and decorated in the old brutalist style with weapons everywhere. A martial temple then, it reminded her of the heart of the training hall at the TOBJ. Perhaps its guardians had all taken to the battle field, that was if their faith had protected them against the plague.

No, not all had gone it seemed. One solitary figure remained aside from herself; he was dressed darkly enough she might almost have missed him altogether and even looking straight at him his face seemed utterly swamped in shadow. She could not make out his features at all but she did spy a Draich resting on his shoulder, his hand still grasped the hilt and the blade was unsheathed, had he been fighting? If so she could not see an enemy and now was hardly the time for working blade forms, not with so many real foes to be faced.

"Walk in blood," she offered greeting in a formal temple style as seemed only right for the sole guardian of such a place from a mere neophyte such as herself
"Might I ask where are your fellows?"

Going down into the main chamber Se'alara will strike up a conversation with Taldien who she believes to be one of the regular staff as it were.

Alas! The guard's wound was so weird in colour and erratic in tremor that the infection was a certainty.
With that sad news confirmed, the squad leader terminated the guard's life on the spot, stopping any risk of further contagion.
Clavisson took the deceased guard's amulet and told Seth: "This protection seems not to have been sufficient. Maybe it can be reinitiated?

Leaving the other guards, Seth resumed his escort towards the city hall. Before long, they were once again on the main street heading West.
The tall guard jogged too quickly for the Son of the Jail's taste but he had to keep pace. As he had done previously, the mage detective lit his staff with all the arcane energy he could collect while walking, in order to detect and anticipate any unexpected encounter.

Suddenly the Truth seeker stopped and shouted "Who's there?".
In the darkness, the arcane dim purplish light had sensed a presence and rushed directly towards a still silhouette.
Short of stature and lightly built, the newcomer did not conjure a threatening air. He was wearing a short brown robe, slit high along the leg. Dozens of small pockets adorned it in a seemingly random pattern, and hanging from the belt were a collection of pouches. The only weapon carried by the strange elf was a staff, capped at both ends in darkened iron.

Clavisson followed Seth getting closer to the intriguing presence. Soon it became obvious that there was not aggressivity nor threat, as the stranger just waited silently for the massive guard to get closer, and did not try to hide from Clavisson's crystal light.
"He seems ill protected for someone travelling alone", observed the detective, loud enough for the two others to hear.

Engaging conversation with Valin.

Ah, more people. Valin thought as his eyes fell upon the pair an instant before one called out to him. “That answers that question, they’re alive.” he muttered to himself as he gave a distracted little wave and headed towards them. His sense of direction was saying he should be going a slightly different way to get straight to his destination but he was coming to realise walking about on his own was so much effort. Dead things, be they elves or rats were becoming a bore though he would be interested to see if this pestilence effected cold ones.

As he closed on the figures he could make out that one was clearly a guard while the other was robed. Unfortunately both seemed in good shape, so the chance of another test subject for healing was slim. “I’m Valin,” he began as he came close enough to speak without shouting. “You haven’t seen any rats around have you? Pesky little blighters, though fascinating how the disease reanimates them. Wouldn’t want to run into another swarm while heading to the drachau’s palace, well, not without a cage to catch a specimen anyway. Of course if they moved alone I’d just catch the one myself, but they swarm around the place. Not at all like the infected elves.” He paused for a moment as he realised he may be going slightly off topic. “So who are you?”

Met Valin, a rat hunter.
He complains that rats get the disease too.
Many rat swarms around, could be dangerous.
Suspected Skaven influence, to be checked.

“So who are you?”, asked the newcomer.
Not well versed in local habits, Clavisson let the guard answer for both of them.
The lack of formality denoted a low caste rat hunter, thought the detective. Still, he was unsure about how to categorize him.
After a silent interval, Seth understood that he had to reply himself. My squad call me Seth. Inquisitor Clavisson, er, reporting to the call of our dear Drachau. Valin, if you care for company, come with us!

The squad leader resumed walking towards the city hall. He seemed not willing to waste too much time before he could go back and resume duty with his beloved mistress.
The two elves in robes had little choice but to follow him.

While walking, Clavisson fueled the discussion with Valin, if only to get more information.
He cleared first: "Don't take concern about the title, in reality, I'm just auxiliary inquisitor.
Is drachau's place far from the city hall? How come the drachau himself is plagued by infested rats?"

Walking and discussing.

OOC: In order to allow a pursuit of the dialogue, I took the liberty to have Seth talk, using similar words as when he encoutered Clavisson.
Resuming walk should smoothen the next encounter, whenever it happens.
Of course, if that was not appropriate, feel free to edit the post.

Good fortune eventually followed the rather spotty luck he had been experiencing as the strangers he met were actually heading for the palace too. Though of course it would stand to reason that those that survive might make their way towards the places of power. Spinning slightly he fell in beside the other robe wearing elf. For a moment he stared at the elf as he spoke, a quizzical look etching itself onto his face.

“Hmm, I don’t know. Tell me where the city hall is and I’ll tell you if it’s near. The directions I got only included the palace. Though why the city would have a city hall and a palace I don’t know. One seems rather redundant wouldn’t you say? As for is the drachau plagued with rats, well if he has a sewer in his palace than probably. I cant imagine undead vermin would respect class boundaries. On the up side, after the plague is cured this city will probably have no more vermin. The dead ones ate all the live ones. That’s a sight to see incidentally, real frenzy. Almost the same as how the infected elves attack us.” He paused for a moment. “Except for the swarming bit anyway. Why does the Drachau want you anyway, someone in need of torturing? I don’t expect that would be an effective method of discovering information on the disease. I’m quite certain the disease has no method of feeling pain anyway.”

After realising he’d once again been speaking rather more than was considered acceptable he paused to let the others speak. It could provide some information.

Zarathi walked slowly through the site of desolation. Images of destruction were creeping from the shadows, the stench was whispering about despair and she could hear nothing apart from her own footsteps. Every room confirmed once again that in this house nothing but death was still breathing.

Reluctantly, the girl came to trust that there is no immediate danger to fear. She released her grip on the sheathed sword and looked around for anything she could salvage. A piece of cloth to make bandages or patches, a thread for sewing, a sharp letter opener. There were so many useful things lying unnoticed in the household of every common elf. So many useful things she missed.

She searched the rooms quickly, relying more on luck than thoroughness. So many useful things but she did not seem to find a single one. It almost seemed like someone had been there before. She continued her search nevertheless and walked upstairs, hoping she could get some scraps at least.

Then, in the bedroom, she finally found out whose home she had entered. In the corner, next to a big bed, a woman was lying, veiled only in her hair and blood, with eyes watching the intruder untiringly. A mere few days ago, she was probably quite pretty. Zarathi quickly looked around, and when she was sure to be alone, she walked to the corpse and crouched beside her, taking care not to stain herself with blood. She saw several bruises on the dead body which could have come from a fist, a nasty wound on the back of her head, matching a bloodied spot on the wall, and a clear cut in the throat. Behind the woman's nails, there was blood and shreds of skin. Zarathi closed the corpse's eyes and stood up.

“It seems you retained your dignity at least,” she said to her motionless companion. “It seems you fought bravely to defend your rightful home. This is a good death for a Druchii. I hope your soul gets what it deserves for it.”

The mercenary sighed. It should have been the husband saying the parting words. Where was he? Standing on watch a few streets away? Killed by the looters? Eaten by rats? The bed was surely too big for a lone elf and so was the house.

Shaking her head, she turned away and continued searching the building, while her thoughts raced on. Who were the attackers, anyway? Such a clear cut could have hardly come from a claw. From the sounds outside, the city lied in chaos - how many cutthroats had already used the opportunity to enrich themselves? How many houses had suffered the same fate?

Burdened by grave thoughts, Zarathi decided to end her search and let her acquaintance rest in her mausoleum. She returned downstairs, removed the barricade on one window and crawled through it towards the spire. She walked cautiously and looked around carefully, for the city was apparently full of monsters and some of them looked just like elves.

Searching the house, saying parting words to the woman, as no one else is going to do it (I decided that she fought for her home and was killed for it, but that she suffered nothing more). Then leaving the house. It seems logical to me that there is a suitable window in the ground floor. If it is not the case, she is going to jump from the bedroom.

The rat hunter was more investigative than expected. "Why does the Drachau want you anyway, someone in need of torturing? I don’t expect that would be an effective method of discovering information on the disease. I’m quite certain the disease has no method of feeling pain anyway.”

The detective took some time before answering. Actually, he had wondered the same, reluctantly: why would the drachau need a rookie detective, even less a torturer that he would certainly not lack? The answer he gave was plausible.
"Torture is only one means to find the truth. A pleasant one, I must say, but not the only one.
But I doubt that I was summoned to interrogate who suffers from the disease. The disease is a symptom. If it has been introduced by someone's will, this is something I may have to investigate. On those not affected. By all means."

This rat hunter had a good sense of observation. He could be of some help in Clavisson's own investigation.
"Did you see where the infected rats were coming from? Do they show a similar disease as elves?"

Chatting.
