[PLOG] Old member, new work [updated 19/10]

Post by Gnosis »

Hi all. I have not been active on these forums for quite some time, though I remained an occasional lurker. The reasons for my inactivity can be mostly attributed to a waning interested in the hobby, but since the beginning of last year, I'm back in full swing. Such fullness of swing if you will, that I recently decided to start up a Wordpress blog:

http://abrushwithbattles.wordpress.com

I'll try to keep this thread updated as new contributions are posted. Feel free to comment!

Thank you for your praise. I'm currently doing a lot of commission work and have several historical projects running in tandem with the playtesting of a certain game, so I'm not sure when I would be putting paint to Warhammer models, let alone Dark Elves.

Great to see someone on here painting Napoleonics. What sort of battalion size and basing convention have you settled on? Whose figures are they? I've become very fond of the Front Rank ranges, would be berrer if I lived in the UK for shipping costs though.

Nice to see you painting again. I particularly like the way you painted the red on the beastmen (simple and effective). Are you planning on telling us what kind of game you are playtesting?

@ Lazarus: The Napoleonics are Perry Miniatures sculpts. The guy I'm painting these cavalry for uses different basing conventions, but we're basing our infantry as four models per company on a 40x45mm base and six companies per battalion, and cavalry as two models per company on a 60x45mm base and four companies per squadron. The models seem slightly wide apart but it still feels like a full battalion/squadron while reducing costs.

@ Mennorach: We'll soon start playtesting an upcoming expansion for Saga, a skirmish game set in the Dark Ages. Only the new expansion will feature a different setting... I'll update the blog with pictures of my warband which will undoubtedly hint strongly at the type of setting ;)

So the man to figure ratio is 30:1 for the infantry, generally there are two companies per squadron and maybe four sqadrons per regiment of cav. does that equate to 16 models per regiment of cav? Perry's are very nice, I'm a little disappointed that their Napoleonics range is all late period. Because of my experience being stationed over there and familiarity with the area, I really like the 1809 campaign.

Those are the ratios I had in mind, yes. With these ratios we can build three battalions out of two box sets and one and a half a regiment of cavalry per two box sets.

I have chosen the late war Perry Miniature plastics for the same reason you would choose an earlier period - I live not too far from Waterloo. But Victrix covers your preference quite well, I have a box of their 1807-1812 line infantry (sadly untouched at this point) and I must say they're very close to Perry quality.

Nice job on the heavies, don't forget the regimental number on the side of the portmanteau! Have you given any thought to using more than one trumpeter model placed center of mass to mimic the original real formation?

Forgot about the number as I didn't have access to my uniform reference material (I have some very general works and a friend has just begun collecting Prussians). Forgot about the grenade badges as well...A short, violent bout of fffffffuuuuuu seems in order. It's too late anyway, I've delivered them to the commissioner today (and he didn't notice, huzzah!).

Anyway, on the trumpeters: If I ever decide to build a huge regiment of Cuirassiers (and I just might, for a Michel Ney diorama I might some day create) I'm definitely going to do a 1:1 scale unit composition and include loads of trumpeters, but for gaming purposes my eight-model cavalry units are going to have to cope with just the one trumpeter.

I think my motivation depends on what I'm painting. With many different projects plus some commissions going on at the same time, I can switch back and forth between different types of models for variety. I'd hate it too if I had to paint a horde of spearmen in one go, so I paint them per ten or so and paint different things between each batch.

By the by, I updated the blog with my Vikings.

I'll show you the Warlord here:

Thinking about your comment about Ney at Quatre Bras, a friend of mine and I spent many nights playing through the old SPI boardgame "Ney vs Wellington". It always turned out that if the French had been more aggressive in the morning and forced the Allies hand that the battle turned out in their favor. Ney's hesitation, probably because of his experiences with Wellington in Spain, created Waterloo. If not for his delay, Wellington would not have had the chance to regroup and the hundred days would have drug on a little longer....my opinion anyway

Ney was unduly prepared for that battle, and was chosen for the role rather poorly by Napoleon. It is my belief that Ney was a great leader of men but a poor strategist. His characteristic zeal left him that day, I believe due to little preparation (he had to borrow some horses to get to the front from where he was bivouacked) but perhaps also due to his advancing age... Same as Napoleon.

Do you know if they still make that boardgame?
