I need eagles that aren't eagles.
So, I have the heavily DE themed HE army who's back story is they are an old DE colony on the south coast of Araby. I have been using 3 harpies to a base as my eagles, but they tend to get stared at, both because they are naked and they really don't explain the stomp they get as a monstrous critter.
So, I have been looking for alternatives (yes i could just buy eagles, but that would be boring)
So, i was thinking more lizard flyers like my great eagle mount or something I can swipe from the lizard range.
Now as its Arabia - plus i have Djinn and other things linked to the army anyway - so I was thinking Ushabti with wings.
In the new HE book eagles can have both ASF and AP, which seems dumb on a bird, but would make sense on a construct. The question is, what wings???

Perhaps the Dark Eldar scourge wings would work?

They look great, but I suspect they might be a little small.

Vargulf with a lion head (from high elf chariot) and a barbed tail so it looks something like a smaller manticore.

Yes, that is an idea. I have some lions about the place and making a stinger is well within my scratch building ability.
Edit, looking quite practical. I had looked at vagists, but they are a terrible model. Off to e-bay!

OK, the vargulf turned up today so its together with its new head (HE lion) and tail (5th ed lictor as I was too lasy to make one) and roughly the right shape. I just need to texture the neck, fill some holes and remove some flashing.
@Dyvim tvar: thank you so much for the idea, it was brilliant.

The mini Manti has indeed turned out to be a great idea by the looks of things!

What about Terradons? might be a bit pricey but have never seen it done before.

I thought that too, but I have a winged cold one I use as a dark peg/great eagle. If this didn't work out I was going to get some of the forgeworld cold ones and stick trimmed down black dragon wings on them like this guy

Definitely Screamers of Tzeentch ! I plan to buy one day at least 6 pf them and play them as eagles or warhawks ! They are so cheap and so elegant. Especially for Araby themed colony these ocean sorcerous mantas are heaven !

This is looking solid and I am really looking forward to seeing it painted. Glad I could provide some inspiration.
