(Not that I am not following the thread. I am just unsure what Ladry would be doing atm, she is basically just sitting around keeping an eye on the slaves, and pondering how magic works).

This is my understanding, too: Mango writes some introduction for Harkyl and then either you come up with some sort of plan what do you want to do next or the captain will order something. :)
(But no rush, I have only written half a paragraph from the mysterious book so far so I know how to amuse myself if writing mood hits me. :) )

Well, everyone waits for Mango, it has been 10 days now.
I'd suggest making a deadline, and if still no post, then a crazy Modpost would give all of us some reason to react? :P

Hi all,

I am very very sorry about slowing down the roleplay game. I have had a few minutes here and there regularly to troll the rest of the site but haven't had/made a block of time to sit down and puzzle out Harkyl's next move. I am very sorry, time kind of slipped by and I haven't posted in far far too long.

I wil remedy this tonight. and will get the game back on the road.

Once again. I am sorry.

@ MangoPunch
Nice story, compliments. I assume it reflects the truth.
There's no intention to lie in Caraoc's reply either. Let's say that as a corsair, he has served years ago on the same ship, with same captain.
Please provide whichever details you feel fit (preferably funny) and Caraoc will acknowledge that you're telling the truth. For example, you may tell that the ban on singing is still in force, or worse...
That should ease your merging into our group.

Calisson, this was a nice idea with the captain you both knew. Thanks.

I am going to make an experiment: if you want to do something please tell me even before writing about it ("once there is occasion I want to speak to X"; "I want to secretly set the bulding on fire while we go out"; "I really want to answer this challenge but have no time to post"). If you report such a plan I will know I should wait with the story and let you write your intention; if there are no such reports I will know I can push the story two weeks forwards without making anyone unahppy.

... what a modpost On the Boundary between Life and Death!
I was wondering how it would combine with the previous modpost displaying Caraoc sings and looks strangely.

It is not simple to understand how the book works.
The book was in the hands of an alchemist.
It is a Human book written in the Elven tongue.
The book's title is about Life and Death.
The book was found in the village which, on Harkyl's map, bore the mark of Shyish – the mark of the necromancer and of death.
But the Book is more about survival than about Death.

The content of the book is many pages of philosophy and magic.
It deals with all winds of magic, it could possibly hint about the powers of High or Dark magic.
The key lessons are
- about surviving
- and to cover the weaknesses of one magic source with the strengths of another.
The author could have been a Human mage living in Ulthuan and wise enough to be accepted by the HE. Quite a feat!

The book inspired once visions to Caraoc, either as a practitioner of Azyr or as a scald. Based on the visions, it would seem that most arcane practitioners should be able to develop an empathy with that book, most likely linked with their proficiency, i.e. prophecies for Caraoc.

The book says that Azyr disciples can sometimes twist the fate itself. Supposing that this is developed in a chapter, that chapter should be of the hightest interest to Caraoc.
But the important teaching in the book is to balance Azyr's weaknesses with another magic source's strengths.

The plan for Caraoc is:
1. to master what the book can teach about Azyr and twisting fate;
2. to determine which wind would best complement Azyr.
At first glance, Azyr is about large destructions from the skies, and altering fate.
Weaknesses come from location (weaker when not outdoors) and from lacking precision.
Beasts could complement it well, enhancing individual capabilities, and working in burrows.

well its a magic artefact, so maybe it translate itself so that the one holding it can read it?
also (dont know how relevant this will be) but most Necromancers turn towards their trade (working with death) to actually avoid the inevitable of it. also, wouldnt it end up hinting more towards High Magic? from memory High Magic is the art of weaving all winds together while Dark Magic is simply ripping the raw energy of the Winds before they even start to form.

but i'll let that pondering up to you :P ive got my own mystery to solve... *grabs those flasks again*

@ Calisson: Good to see you have something to think about. :) Just to clarify, the village you have just left is marked on the map with the sign of Lakh (glory, infamy, victory over death, necromancy), not Shysh. Not that your character cannot be confused. :)

I am not going to write the chapters about Ghur and Azyr as well (at least I am not planning it at the moment) so I will provide a quick summary:

In Azyr the author admires its efficiency. A good heavens mage - so he claims - does not cast with raw force; he just tips the balance in the right direction and the rest then cascades naturally. It would be extremely hard to find a rock on the skies and throw it on the battlefield with pure force but it is quite possible to push it a bit so it falls on its own. The real challenge is to know where to push when such complicated systems as weather are involved. To this end, the mage has to hone his intuition.
A similar approach can be used for twisting fate. No one knows what the fate is or if it exists at all; but with the right intuition and some small pushes one can decide if some action fails or succeeds. Changing fate further then a few moments forwards becomes almost impossible as there are too many factors involved though divination is possible to some extent [but do not expect more accurate visions than what you have already experienced - I am not that stupid :D ].

Beast magic as viewed by the author is about finding the beast within yourself and the others and using its potential while keeping it under control. The author prefers to use beast magic augments as rarely as possible because he prefers having a clear mind and casting a Ghur spell on yourself means supressing your mind so that the instincts have a free stage; how much of your clear thinking you retain depends on your willpower but some effect it has on everyone. Before releasing the Beast, one should get to know it first and accept it as it is; this makes resisting it easier and helps foresee if there is something that could go wrong. After the spell is ended, there is a period of time where the Beast is more alive than usually; this can heighten the target's bloodlust or sexual desire so again, caution is advised.
The Beast is also easy to scare, which can be used to weaken one's foes.
The author discards the offensive ability of Ghur as he finds it inferior to fire, for example, and studying this branch of Beasts magic would require too much time for too little gain; if someone already knows it, however, there is no reason not to use that knowledge.

@ Searinox: You are right about High magic. However, Dark magic combines all lores as well, only in a more destructive manner (High = folding them nicely together; Dark = smashing them forcefully so that something blows up). Necromancers use a strange kind of dark magic, too.
Good luck with your flagons - I fear you do not have enough information to solve this yet but maybe you will surprise me. :)

Regarding the "PM me if you wanna do something" part, I like it. But for the record, some posts ago, Ladry did think that she would like to burn some of the prisoners if they where too weak to take aboard :P
I'm gonna reveal some of her murderous nature here in my next post, if that is not cool just let me know and ill change it. Not like it influences what happens overall, I just want the others to know her lust for fire is starting to, well. You know.

Originally, I wanted to discuss this publicly but you outvoted me - so yes, you are in the captain's cabin or in the corridor near it. It is a bit crowded there, I am afraid, with the captain, Incaneth, Caraoc, Harkyl and Ladry (and maybe someone else I do not know about at the moment :) ) all on a tight spot. :) But let's ignore this unimportant practical detail. :)
